Worse than an MMO I tell you...

4th game played I whooped up on the Warlord lvl and finally broke my 3 game "You play like Dan Quayle" streak. I made it all the way to Shaka Zulu.

Accomplishments? Tips?

Did you get the 'Beyond the Sword' expansion? Some of the mods are killer.

Just finished reading about it. I went with the $39.99 gold, still need to pick up the Sword though. Was waiting to hear some feedback. And for it to go to $20. $29.99 for a couple of new bells is too much imo.

For an expansion it really it is worth it. If you never picked up he Warlords expansion it gives you the basic game play changes as well, but I don't think it gives you the mods and scenarios. So it's really like 1 1/2 expansions in one.

As for accomplishments: The other day I finished a game where I tried to win through culutre alone. I ended up converting almos the entire world to my religion. I had only one war and the poor mother fuckers regreted it when half he planet turned on him.

It was the 4th time I've ever played the game. And the instruction manual is ******

My points were like 9500ish. No clue how good that is.

Loving the holy city, that made the difference as I saw the same as Git, 3 countries all turned on him for the next 100yrs or so.

Oh btw - there's a challenge game out there somewhere where a guy plays ghandi and is determined to win (on like Monarch or Deity or something) with NO army. The only unit he allowed himself was the starting warrior.

He did it.

I'm hoping to get Beyond the Sword soon. But I also want some Wii games, the online adapter for the Wii, the recharger for the Wii remotes... so much gaming, so little money.

Oh, as for tips - Civilization Fanatics' Center is a really nice site. I sometimes read their forums, and they have some good advice. Probably better than what we can give you.

Combat in Civ always killed me.

I will stick with Medieval Total War 2.

It is the most frustrating part - the mechanics are completely jacked up.

What's so frustrating about it? I've seen lots of gunships taken down by longbow because of defensive bonuses from being in a town. Happens all the time. Rambo, First Blood etc.

Haha, I don't think Stallone is a leader choice (though that'd be pretty funny - what would be the UU?).

Civ2 wasn't that bad for it. I only played Civ3 a couple times though and it was so crapped up that I never had the enthusiasm to try it again. I understand it's been patched since its initial release but, still. Never felt a call to try Civ4, probably because 3 was such a disappointment.

I never tried Civ3, but from what I hear, Civ4 blows 3 out of the water. You should get it, Joph. I like it more than Civ1 or 2.

What I like in Civ 4 is the freedom, yes its very possible to hold one epic city and make all your neighbors green with envy and fight each other.

Its possible to have the holiest city in the world (Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity, Islam) and make your neighbors wage holy wars upon one another (especially if you hold all true faiths) Dont like your Jewish Spaniard friends getting a bit too demanding? Switch your religion to Taoism and ask the Zulu to wipe them off for you, or even more effective, make sure everyone of your opponents has access to every religion, then coerce them into switching to a minor religion that no other state has picked, and in the name of the entire pantheon of gods let them be smote!

Or you can just be a barbarian and smash all, ask questions later. A man of your calibre wouldnt opt for such violent means now would he?

Or the use of corporations is always entertaining.

And the new scenarios make the game extremely replayable

Since I got a broken rib playing football, and my internet connection is down, I've been playing lots of Civ 4 in the last few days.

Definately buy Beyond The Sword, it's a great extension.

Some tips:

- Don't grow too big, especially at the start. Basically, only build a new town if you can afford it, ie if your Research settings doesnt go below 80%. if you have too many cities, it'l cost you, and you wont be able to afford more than 50% Research, and then you'll get screwed on the techs.

- Use your Civilisation/Leader's characteristic well. For ex, if they are "spiritual", change your "government" everytime you go to war (by taking the one where you get 2 experience points for every unit created, or going to nationalism). Since you don't lose turns of anarchy, its totally worth it.

- Specialise your cities: You should have 1 Holy City/Great People, 1 Science, 1 Commerce, and then 2 Military. You should always try to have the 3:2 (culture:military) ratio. And only build what's necessary. No need to do a library in your military towns, and no need for barracks in your Holy City.

Well, those are the basics, but with those tips I can win on Prince, with pretty much any Civ/Map. Monarch is still a bit hardcore for me though, so any further tips on how to win that way are welcome!

The new random events are awesome, if not a pain some times.. they add flavour.

The new aspects like espionage and corporations I havn't had a chance to mess with yet cause I keep on starting games over... and I refuse on principle to do an advanced start... I want to grow from the begining...

All in all though, this expansion improves the game ALOT. It seems to give yoiu something to do in the Modern Era than simply build up units.

and yeah, some of these scenarios and mods may as well be entirely different games.

Who's up for a Challenge? Let me know. It's be cool if a bunch of us could get an ongoing game. you CAN save the Multiplayer games too y'know.

I played Dodobird once (who now won't play again) and I was supposed to play Red sometime.
HIt me up, holmeses

I'd be up for an online game, for sure!

I'm also loving Rhye's and Fall of Civilisation, a mob made by some hardcore fan. It's a Huge Earth map, with every Civ starting in the right place, and at the right Era. You then have Civ specific objectives. It's all made to be as realistic and historical as possible. You can find it at www.Civfanatics.com, though it takes a good cpu to run it, since the map is so big.
