I'm not sure which of the three pubs in Doolin it was, but while visiting Ireland my wife and I had the most phenomenal fresh seafood chowder there. This stuff was just flat-out, knock your socks off delicious. To this day, it remains the most delicious soup I've ever had.

edit: okay, so it wasn't my local eatery, but I'm sure it was someone's local eatery.

I have also eaten in a so called "Top" place in Manchester and frankly i could do better

That's a bit like "The sexiest woman in Grimsby", "ScUnthorpe's best Goalkeeper" or "The best Pork Butcher in Jerusalem"

Seriously though - If you want that sort of food, go to TGI Friday's. In the USA I found the food and service pretty average, but over here, their steaks, grills and service are really good.

Satay, Duck A l'orange and chocolate cake?

That is a 1975 menu, right?

Better than a big mac don't you think? and streets ahead of nouvelle cuisine...

To be honest 1977 or 2007 that meal was f*cking awesome.

I don't doubt you enjoyed it, so I'm not decrying it's worth.

It just seems that a menu like that (and 'nouvelle cuisine') is like enjoying Slade, the Doobie Brothers and The Osmonds.

Good in their day, but give me the sort of hearty food that encompasses the best of Cordon Bleu technique and wholesome British or French country fare.

I enjoy a Big Mac from time to time, and even KFC. But 'best meal'?

Please.

Try Ramsay at Claridges, Windsor Grill or Petit Blanc. Change out of £50, and you'll see what amazing food, cooked by genuinely talented chefs can be like, and you may see what I mean.

For a romantic night out with Jonwin, The Helmand

We go to http://thejamesjoycepub.com/default.html, when we want a pint with our meal. Saddly they took some of the traditional Irish Pub food of the menu. You can still get Corned Beef and Cabbage, but no more Irish Bacon and Cabbage. The chef is from Central America and makes the best Irish Stew in the city.

The Civil War Museum next door is closing next month, but it went down hill after they lay off their full time employee.
