Great Perseids

Quote:
Sunday, August 12th. Next to the circle write "all night" and "Meteors!" Attach the above to your refrigerator in plain view so you won't miss the 2007 Perseid meteor shower.

"It's going to be a great show," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center. "The Moon is new on August 12th--which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors." How many? Cooke estimates one or two Perseids per minute at the shower's peak.
This should be awesome from my new pitch-black backyard.

I always try to get up and watch this every August. Thanks for the heads up. Most years there is too much cloud coverage though.

Yeah, it's usually too foggy here. The best I've ever seen was in Wyoming. Dry air, no ambient light.

Where I used to live there were too many city lights. Here if the fog of the ocean isn't too bad it should be awesome. Being a total geek, I keep statistics and I think I have last years for comparison.

Will be awesome out here. The dense layers of smog add all sorts of nifty colors to everything!

I saw a good chunk of this last night, before I dozed off because I was mildly inebriated. Set up a blanket in my backyard, not a cloud in the sky, and since I live in the sticks no city lights. It was quite nice, that is, until my pain in the *** gf spilled melted ice cream all over the blankets because she thought it would be a good idea to bring a pint of Ben & Jerry's and leave it there for a couple hours in 80 degree weather. wimmenz Smiley: oyvey

I live in the middle of a city so I almost didn't see anything. But my girlfriend and I went out to a small playground that never has any lights turned on and saw what little we could. Saw a few good ones, but that was pretty much it for an hour of sitting there.

The stupid buildings around me got in the way. And even then there was too much light from the local fire station. >.<'

I went out for a few minutes around 12:45am. There were only a few wispy clouds but, being in the middle of an apartment complex, with a security light flickering on and off every 2 minutes, and the pervasive glow of the city spanning the entire southern hemisphere I could see stars - but no meteors.
