From time to time I harass the forums for ideas for new music. Whether it be 80's punk, old country, 60's classics, favourite albums of all time, local artists etc. Arctic Monkeys to Elmore James to Rza anything and everything. I am not a record store priss with hopes for elitism, I just enjoy anything and everything and constantly want to expand my catalogue.

The challenge for the week is a broad one, Mo-town to Stax records, and beyond. Chuck Berry to Marvin Gaye. 50's rock n' roll to the groove of mo-town. Big chunk of music and a number of genres, I know but I need to fill up my Ipod.

Thanks in advance

A quick suggestion is Amy Winehouse's song Rehab. Obviously not real motown but the song is done in a motown melody.

Bill Withers - Ain't no Sunshine
Mirwais - Disco Science (from the Snatch soundtrack)
Three Days Grace - Animal I have become
Frank Sinatra - More than you know (or the original, which I don't know who sang but it's awesome)

I've been listening to a lot of early 90's stuff recently, so I'd suggest rediscovering Live, the Toadies, Violent Femmes, and Silverchair.

Well, I saw Arlo Guthrie this weekend...he played some new stuff that I enjoyed. 'm thinking I may need to pick up a cd ISmiley: lol...(the old was better though).

If you have no Nick Drake on your ipod you should.

Ray LaMontagne I believe is local to New England. Though, I think a couple of his songs are hits??..anyway, he's got some good stuff. His Trouble cd probably being the best or at least the most popular.

I don't have an ipod yet...should I wait? Is there something newer and betterer coming along shortly?

If it's 50's & '60's you want:

Mack Rice
Otis Redding (pre 1966)
Percy Sledge (but not his wussy "When a MaaaAAan . . . " cack)

If you already have yankee stuff, some brits from that era

Lonnie Donnegan (King of 'skiffle' music)
Cleo Laine (usually with Johnnie Dankworth)

Jackie Wilson-Lonely Teardrops(because I know you're stable enough right now to listen to these songs and appreciate them)

So far I have hit all the obvious ones.

Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Temptations, Four Tops, Tina & Ike, Stevie Wonder, etc.

Just need up beat stuff, been subjected to nothing but Interpol, Modestmouse, Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio etc for the last 6 months. I need to groove!

Well then I assume included in your et cetera is Smokey Robinson and of course, the Jackson Five.

I really would recommend some Jackie Wilson, though. In particular "Reet Petite", "Am I the Man", and "(Your Love Keeps Liftin Me)Higher and Higher".

Smash Mouth's "Walkin' on the Sun" always puts me in a good mood.

I didn't say it's great music, just that it's a mood lifter. Smiley: laugh

Parliament and Funkadelic are timeless.

I recommend Olatunji's Drums of Passion for another mood spike. He was a lively old African guy, probably dead by now - I saw them 10 or more years ago and he had to be helped onstage by his (grown) grandsons then. Once he got up there, though, he just rocked the fUCk out.

Skatalites: Foundation Ska

if you havn't heard this jewel of world music you're missing out. This is a double CD, mostly instrumental of the first true Ska Band circa 1963-65.

Kinda like Jazz with better rhythm.
Check out the sound samples on Amazon.

Good listening.

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Other less mainstream gems you may enjoy:

1980s husky voiced British Chanteuse - Julia Fordham (think foxy, white Ella Fitzgerald)

Someone mentioned angsty alcoholic tattoo'd Cockney jewish princess Amy Winehouse (Back to Black is awesome and soulful)

Might have been a cliché in the 90s, but "The Commitments" soundtrack works well - Andy Strong (before he became a professional ********* sings 'Try a Little Tenderness' in an amazing way

Robert Wyatt is an overlooked giant of performance

John Martyn (on rare sober occasions) is a sensational singer/songwrtiter who's still doing awesome stuff 30 years on (When he's rat-****** he still sings well.) "May You Never" is the Father-to-Son song that can make me weep.

June Tabor

If you're prepared to listen to non-English stuff.

Patrick Bruel sings wonderful ballads

and if you have no Jacques Brel on your iPpod, just drop it down the toilet now.

Thelma Houston - Don't leave me this way
Fat Les - Vindaloo (annoying and repetitive, but really catchy and a great drinking song, 'specially if you have some extra Brits laying around)
Mystikal - Danger
Wolfmother - Woman
Nas - The Message
Pantera - F'ucking Hostile
Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper's Delight (you should already have it, but I'm including it just to complete. You need this)

Fat Les being Keith Allen (father of Lily Allen)

A fine song!

A little late, but this is a great song. It just came up on my shuffle and I thought I'd share with our favorite broken hearted Cannuck.
