My grandfather used to recount how, in the 1920s, he used to buy cardboard boxes of German Banknotes to use as play money. They were real money, but the parlous state of the German economy meant that a 2-inch thick wad of "Hundert Millionen Deutschmark" bills cost him 1/4d (about a half a US cent).

Looks like Zimbabwe's heading the same way

Quote:
Zimbabwe launches $200,000 note

Zimbabwe is to start circulating a new 200,000 Zimbabwe dollar note, in a bid to tackle the country's inflation, the highest in the world.

The new note, issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe from Wednesday, can buy 1kg (2.2lb) of sugar.

Food and fuel shortages have become common as the government relies more heavily on imports, pushing prices to new heights.

The official annual rate of inflation in Zimbabwe is nearing 5,000%.

5,000%!!!111!!11eleven!

So President Mugabe (Brits will appreciate that his name, backwards, is "E ba gum") is really excelling himself!

Still, at least road-sweepers in Zimbabwe are millionaires! Not something we imperialist western capitalist running dogs can say!

They clearly need to follow the Milton Freedman inflation fighting strategy of letting the poorest 20% of the population starve to death.

The articles are quite sad... people biking 30+ miles each way to work since they cannot afford both gas and food, some neither at all.

Yeah, poor people in Africa. Eye opening.

Man, it must be nice to have that kind of time (and stamina!). I NEVER get a chance to go biking these days.

Well having kicked out the richest 10% (interesting tactic), the bottom 30% are all dead or foraging in the woods.

On the plus side, My "Win A Million in Cash" quizzes at the pub will be cheaper.

(I used to give away 1,000,000 old Turkish Lira - about 90pence or $1.80)

The ZWD or Zimbabwe Dollar is a rescricted currency. The US Government, as well as other world goverments does not allow it to be traded. The only place their money is good(for lack of a better term) is in Zimbabwe.

The zloty has been gaining strength against the US dollar, going from 3.13 PLN per buck last October to only 2.71 PLN to the dollar these days.

Quick! Invest in zlotys!

That was before the screen door submarine contracts went out, though.

Actually, almost every major currency (except the JPY) has been gaining against the USD. The EUR was at an all time high versus the USD, the GBP was at a 26-year high and the CAD is almost in parity.

The slow US economy, as well as rising interest overseas has caused the USD to tank.

If someone offers you a 10% raise if you work tomorrow, you're better off working today.

You could buy 4x as much stuff if you're paid at the beginning of the month rather then at the end.

The new note has the ability to buy 1kg of sugar. At this rate of inflation, in two weeks, it will buy half that.

Africa as a whole screwed up when they kicked the colonial powers out and tried to discover fire, invent the wheel, create clothing not made from bone, leopard skins, and gorilla hair for themselves. Despite apartheid, South Africa was a well run country until the natives got ahold of it. Beyond that, I can't think of another nation that isn't up to their eyeballs in ****.

Granted, white colonialism had its problems and issues, but in comparison most of Africa was a paradise when Belgium, Germany, France, et al were running the place.

south africa was a well run country if you were white and rich you mean. the masses were pretty much indentured servitude if they wanted a loaf of bread to share with their familey.

all whitey did for south africa was exploit them for cheap labor and lined their pockets with the money earned from their sweat and blood. the masses were still starving to death and mostly homeless.

the only thing that has changes with whitey leaving is now there isnt a hand full of whitey folks driving around in their range rovers snubbing their noses at the company slaves.

capitolism has destroyed south africa. the greedy voltures swept in and took controll of the oil, diamond and gold mines, and paid a pittance for labor to the people who actually live there. kind of like we tried to do to Cuba when Castro took controll and kicked our silly butts out.

they are no worse now than they were when whitey was in controll.

Difference between colonials and the new "black" goverments is that the colonials knew how economy worked and how screwed you would be if you let it go to sh*te and how to keep the peace.
Black goverments in Africa are at least as corrupt, pretty much "smash and grab", leaving in their wake even more poverty and oodles of civil strife.
Fe; colonials never used child soldiers :s
SA excluded, theyre still doing okayish.

I was in SA for a while, did a round trip for a month or two and the comment ive heard from the black, blue collars ive had conversations with was: "we thought everything would change, but it didnt, at all".
The difference is that you now also have lots of ****-poor white people but the division of riches stayed the same, the endresult is the same.

Well at least we're not sliding into generalities on this topic Smiley: oyvey

Anyway, a few points:

1) Africa isn't a "country".

2) Things weren't any better under colonialism. You had rich white people running the place, instead of rich black people. But they were just as corrupt/incompetent/self-interested as the ones in power now.

3) Zimbabwe is not the norm for African countries, lots of which are actually doing pretty well.

For rich white people.

Ermn

Ivory Coast, Tjaad, Congo, Guinea, Nigeria arent doing so hot either.
And thats from the top of my head.

I stick with my point that under colonialism there was at least order instead of child soldiers rampantly raiding, raping and killing.

Some african countries are doing better, but arguably not much more then under colonial rule.

There was order under the Khmer/*****/Maoist too. The fact that a brutal minority can keep a majority quiet through overwhelming violence, is not a positive sign of society in any way.

There are an awful lot of things going wrong in some parts of Africa, of course, but there is an awful lof of good too. It just doesn't make the news.

The point is that at least now, they're writing their own history instead of having a gunpowder-ed minority write it for them.

Yeah, but it's not racism if the darkies to it to themselves too. Woosh! There goes all that white guilt!
