Unofficially , they hadn't patrolled in ~2 years.

This is the part of the story that caught my eye:

Quote:
Sinn Fein justice spokesman Gerry Kelly, who led the IRA's first car bomb attacks on London in 1973, accused Britain of repeatedly spurning offers to negotiate.

"It could have come to a conclusion much sooner ... but the British political establishment kept pushing for a military victory that the British army itself knew was impossible to achieve," he said.

Whether he's right or wrong in his assessment, I have no idea. I only know it sounds hauntingly familiar right now.

We have to give General Petraeus time!

At least time enough to make sure it is close enough to the end of the Bush presidency so that he doesn't have to do anything about it and can wait for the next president to have to deal with it.

Speaking of, I'm surprised that the usual suspects haven't crowed about the NYT opinion piece from the other day. I've already seen the "rebuttals" (not the best term but it'll work) but I'm still surprised.

Maybe it was one of those "sit on it for a week then decry how no one else had posted it yet" things.

NYT Op-Ed piece entitled "A War We Just Might Win". The big buzz was that these guys were from Brookings and thus liberals and thus must have been against the war and represent a major shift in Democratic perceptions on the war.

Salon article commenting on the Op-Ed's authors' past stances on the war. Apparently both have had a great deal of support for the war since the start.

Since the British govenment achived all of it objectives in NI and the IRA achived none, i would call this utter ******** personally.

unless there has been a united Ireland while i wasn't looking maybe he should wind his neck in.

Another very moving moment for me. I'm a supporter of Irish Republicanism, but was outraged by the counter-productive violence by Provies and Unionists alike.

John Major, Tony Blair, Gerry Adams and John Hume should feel particularly proud today.

Once again lads and lasses:

It seemed like a such quaint world, when "terrorists" meant the IRA, the Red Brigades and the PLO.

What exactly do you think the IRA achived the Smash?

thier stated goals where a united Ireland and it's not.

The British govenments goal was an end to sectarian Violence from pollitical groups like the IRA and UDA, guess what both has remounced violence.

Please explain how i was wrong oh enlightened one.

Yet.

Their actual goals were a removal of the occupying force from Ireland and a Catholic voice in Ulster. How did that work out again? Oh yeah, they WON.

Ny giving the IRA 99% of what they wanted and ******* the Unionists? Gee, you'd think they would have just done that in 1922 and saved a lot of innocent people being bombed.

On this rare occasion, Smashypoos - you're wrong.

I agree (and hope) that we will see a United Irish Republic, but the IRA's mantra has always been to attain this before laying down a single weapon.

That said - I don't see this as anyone 'winning'. Just conclusion of a nasty phase.

So all the US has to do is stay in Iraq for a total of 38 years - and we can stop patrolling at year 36 - oh the joy! Oh wait, the whole scale of it was different. Never mind.

You're confusing rhetoric with goals. How many times has Downing Street stated they wouldn't meet with the IRA?

Many times - but hardly an 'objective' or 'goal'

No, the objective was the disarming of the IRA without making concessions. The idea that there would have been an Assembly today without the violence of the Troubles is naive and silly.

, which is why I never made such a point.

Oh, and props to Clinton and GWB for putting their weight behind the dialogue.

I know you didn't, you made the point that the stated goal was a reunited Ireland, and hence this wasn't a victory for the Provos. Which is akin to saying the removal of British forced from India wasn't a victory for Ghandi because of the creation of Pakistan.

No, I just stated that their goal was a reunited Ireland.

Can we do this through the medium of Dance or Origami?

This is boring

Honest question I don't know the answer to.

Same funding arrangements as the rest of UK, but combined with Social Services, and policy set in Stormont, not Whitehall.

Nice system.

And they have some of the most experienced surgeons in the world at treating double knee-cappings!

Only on January 1-2 when there's still money available that hasn't been spent on liver transplants, right?

The mighty forces can finally look in pride at the native army that they have taken so long to train to uphold the peace and laws of the land. It is a good thing that they can walk away from a place and know that because they were there that the savages have been kept from tearing each other apart.

Maybe America should partition part of Iraq to the Sunnis and let the rest fend for themselves, Or even better, move some Jewish settlers in there so that both Sunni and Shi'ia can fight those instead of each other.

In August 1969, thousands of young Britons were dispatched to Belfast on what was expected to be a brief assignment. Ostensibly they were sent at the request of the Northern Irish government to help restore order in the wake of widespread violence

38 years huh.
So does this new Prime Minister of yours got some kinda PAtty loyalties or something?
