Out of my recent reads, I'd recommend the following:

The Greatest Traitor: The Life of Sir Roger Mortimer - Fascinating account of a scheming *******

Shakespeare: The Biography - Ackroyd's a great writer and he's clearly done his research.

Franz Kafka: A Biography - A bit heavy-going, but if you're into Kafka's writing it's quite insightful.

I've been lucky enough to meet Deborah Mitford on a few occasions, and despite being slightly batty and of advanced years, is one of those people with a charisma that knocks you sideways.

And I've always been fond of refined old ladies who say "FUck" a lot.

Another goal achieved.

Her late husband was the Patron of a charity I used to administer about 20 years ago, so I had to meet with him every few months to brief him on progress. On the first occasion, this little old lady wandered into his study wearing a headscarf, tweed suit and gumboots and announced "Andrew! That new gardner's pruned the fUcking Azalea! I'll have his balls if I catch him." Smiley: lol That was my first encounter with Deborah, "not Debbie!" Cavendish.

If you go to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (Turn right at New York City and ask for directions), she's often to be seen weeding or planting in the gardens, or acting as if she's just another one of tour the guides around the state rooms.

Last of a fascinating generation

I actually just finished reading this book about Thomas Edison and thought it was awesome.

http://www.amazon.com/Edison-Biography-Matthew-Josephson/dp/0471548065/ref=cm_lmf_tit_1/103-9821129-2457452

You will be amazed at how many things he tried to create...

Robert Caro's Master of the Senate about LBJ was terrific.

I also liked X-Ray, the unauthorized autobiography of Ray Davies, front man for the Kinks.

Those are the only two bio's I've read lately.

Autobiography by the Sex Pistols' singer. Some intriguing insights. I couldn't put it down.

The Bad Popes

I was assigned to read it for some class years and years ago, but actually really liked it.
