So my Beetle is starting to go downhill fast, and not in a good way. The wife and I have been thinking about replacing it with a Mini Cooper whenever it does die, so today we went out to test drive one, and I loved it. Plus having Nobby give us the test drive was cool! Well, he wasn't Nobby, but he was about that tall and sounded a lot like him. I was amazed he fit into the back seat, personally.

So, before I buy one, anyone want to try and talk me out of it?

If it's the "Cooper S", buy it.

If it's an ordinary Cooper, buy it anyway. . . unless you plan keeping it for more than 3 years.

So many friends have had to replace gearboxes, differentials and even the whole engine/gearbox/transmission after just 40 or 50,000 miles. Not a long-term deal IMHO.

However, they're immense fun, and you can throw them around like a shopping trolley and they glue to the road like a glued thing.

And yes, even at 6'7" it's a comfy drive for me.

Strangely enough the Mini Cooper has more interior space than a Dodge Intrepid. No I'm not kidding.

Not to be rude and I'm only going by the occasional bad pic posted here but aren't you like 7'4" and 300+ lbs, with a fro that would put Alfalfa to shame? Can you even fit in the thing?

I've posted the fact before, but the size of the car is less of an issue than the relationship between the seat, steering wheel and pedals.

It seems like a lot more spent on how the car looks than its dependability. I'd say gfet something a bit larger and designed to fit a family. Then again, you got a beetle now, so I'm not sure dependability is what you're looking for. It seems you like the trendy.

I have had a VW for years and had no out-of-the-ordinary problems. In my experience, VW builds a very reliable auto.

That's great, because if they do have a problem, you have to sell your first born child to afford the repairs.

In the past they were, but new VWs are some of the lowest rated vehicles on the road for reliability. Plus, if you need any out of warranty repairs the parts will cost you an arm and a leg.

I'm not sure where the new minis sit.

Dana you do know they say, plan to spend at least 1k a year for maintenance on any car, so you are within the limits!

Yeah, maintenance is one thing, but repairs on TOP of maintenance is another. I spend about $500ish a year on maintenance (the normal oil change/tire rotation/etc stuffs), but I drive an economy car.

I'm only 5 feet tall and for a long time, I really thought this car was custom made for me. I loved the Mini. The look of it, the way it performed on the road, I really wanted one. Until I test drove one. For some reason, I fell out of love with it. I don't know why, the performance was great, but when I got behind the wheel, I was like blech.

These large repairs are on top of normal maintenence, my total's pushing 2-2.5k a year for the last three years

...there is just something very bilious about seeing a grown man in a Mini or a new Bug... they both look kinda' like driveable boobs.
