I hopped on Vanguard & LOTRO for the updates and then logged off - been seriously too busy with unpacking, devoting time to Snorre and Dashiell, and I just started my new job last Monday. Also, I've been knee-deep into this reality-based MMORPG called "Dating" - it's publishers are Match.com and Yahoo Personals. It's been pretty awesome.

As for Vanguard, as things calm down a bit around here I'll try to get back on Hillsbury or if you let me know what server you are on BT I'll roll a toon there with ya.

I'm on Targonor now as Basil Wrathbone the bard. I actually just rerolled today, so I'm all newbish at the moment. I'm giving VG till after the merges occur, and if the population isn't way better I'm gonna find something else to play till the next batch of games come out. That means I'll probably go play EQ again if VG doesn't get it's **** together pretty soon.

I treied playing some offline games but I acn't get into them at all after seven years of MMO's, so I'm at an impass. I don't really think WAR is going to be my thing, Pirates might be or Conan. I am an indecisive cnut.

Ugh, I did that right after I got divorced. Trust me Snorre, you will get laid, many times, and if you are lucky may even find a girlfriend or two but, and I say trust me on this again, the pool is finite. At some point you will find yourself wondering where all the fine women are at. Be ready to deal with the bar scene/ blind dates from friends routine at some point.

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, but Alla's site is blocked at my job and typing on my i-Phone is a pain (but I'll keep working at it). Very cool, I'll try to get on when I get a free minute some time this week. Funny that you went with that name, I've been watching my collection Sherlock Holmes (starring Basil Rathbone) a lot lately.

While I prefer quality over quantity, I hear ya - and yet, I don't think it will come to the bar scene - I'm too old for that - been there, done that back in my 20s and 30s. These online-hookups are almost like blind dates, anyhoo, so that's already covered. I've had a whole mess of meet-ups and there are some more to come, but I am tapering them off a bit. It can get exhausting after a bit. When they start to feel like job interviews, it's time to take a break - I'm almost to that point, but having a lot of fun in the meantime.

Now that I've just started at my new job, getting settled in the house, and devoting a lot of time to the lads (Dashiell and Snorre), I'm not having much free time for just chillin' and I'm not too big on going out on work nights, with maybe one or two times a week as exceptions for special things. For instance, I'm meeting one of my new "friends" to go see a silent film festival tomorrow night. They're showing some films of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Laurel & Hardy. There will be an organist playing live music to the movies, which should be pretty cool.

There have been some fun, friend-type hook ups and quite a few "no chemistry" first meeting hook-ups. However, there has been a couple that are relationship-worthy, especially this one beautiful, smart, and funny woman that I am seeing again for the 3rd time. We're taking it slow and having a good time, but she's a keeper so far.

I won't be rushing off to the altar any time soon (hell, won't even be divorced until November!) but life is pretty fun and it's certainly a hell of a lot better than the last few months when I was in San Francisco going through the whole separation/impending divorce stuff.

FYI, Turbine has started a referral service where any paying member can now offer a trial key to someone else. So if you ever wanted to try LoTRO, you can let myself or Yanari know (I think we're the only two Asylum folks) and they can get you in for 10 days.

In the spirit of disclosure, I'll say that you upgrading to a retail account nets the referer 30 days of free play but I assume that anyone who was gung-ho about playing would be playing by now anyway. Just thought I'd make the offer.

Nothing at all to do with anything but, if anyone whose name I recognized wanted to chat about nautical themed issues, they could send me a PM and be added to my journal.

check out http://www.mmorpg.com

there are a bunch of them coming out at the end of the year. some look like flops already, but a couple look decent. so far, they all just dont seem to get it, they all look like group orientated games in an industry where the leader is the leader because you DONT have ot group. /boggle

but gods and heros lets you create your own squad of NPCs to lead, so who knows, mabe its a "solo grouping game?" hehehe, dont know, but the graphics are nice.

if vanguard launches in the middle of that pack comming online, well, probably not gona be very good for them. might be better off waiting till the middle of next year where there will be less compatition and give them more time to figure out people just dont group a whole lot in ANY game.

got a free invite for EQ2 also, but gona take a pass. i like the graphics and all, but the button smashing fighting, and LOOOOONG fights just gets too tedious for me. not to mention, their low and mid level game is almost as empty and non-existant as Vanguards and EQ1.

might be worth it to check out what they did with calabis, but i noticed that wasnt included in the deal......it just HAS to be better than the "purple fairy" expansion that so delighted flamers throughout the mmorpg community.

honestly, i dont see any of them really standing out. but who knows, WoW didnt really stand out either untill it launched. oddly, Vanguard did stand out....untill it launched.....so mabe theres hope in there somewhere.

You must live on a different planet to me then, i distinctly remember

A. Loads of people on this site raving about WoW from Mid beta onwards.

B. Equal amounts of people giving detailed reasons why V:SoH was going to flop both here and on the Sigil forums.

WoW had about the biggest buzz imaginable for a good year before it launched.

wow had alot of buzz, but what i read was mostly negative. words like "kiddie game" and "sunday cartoons" come to mind. i remember people saying it wouldnt last a year.

there were some positive posts too, but the majority of them were very negative.

Vanguards site had alot of negative posts when it was close to launch, but the majority were positive up untill about a month before launch concerning the game itself. and frankly, the game was fine. it played just fine. its only real problems were 1. no top end game for the people who blasted to 50 in a few weeks, and 2. it was focused around grouping which died when those people blasted past the low and mid level game and the grouping stoped.

the biggest reason Vanguard is a failure has nothing to do with the "not ready", released too soon", "too many bugs", "doesnt perform well" crap you read on the web sites. it failed because they designed a grouping game and the grouping STOPPED once the powergamers blasted past the low and mid level game.

there WAS a whole lot of negative chatter though when Sigil announced they were selling out to SOE like they did with EQ. that was mostly anti SOE chatter though, not anti Vanguard chatter.

there were alot of people who hated Sigil for selling out to SOE. and alot of people who hated them for backpeddeling on the "powergamers only" vision tm they promised during development. but the "reasons" people blasted Vanguard for were mostly invalid and didnt really contribute to their demise.

anyone who was there for EQ1 or AO launch could tell you Vanguards launch was not too bad as far as bugs go. and anyone who played the game can not say the game was unplayable because of bugs or performance issues realted to the game and not their own equipment.

all that is just hate spamm that really means little. same could be said about any game though. people will defend the choice they made and crucify any and all competition for even the most insignificant glich. like they did with WoW and the "kiddy game" remarks.

Vanguard is dieing a slow death because they didnt get the message. most gamers, reguardless of what they say, dont do a whole lot of grouping. most. like 90 percent of them. mabe more. and vanguard built a game designed around an outdated concept people want no part of anymore for the most part. "earned rewards", "camping", "competitive pve", "raids", hell, even "grouping" pretty much.

they coppied and released a better version of "pong" AFTER donky kong was released. sure there are some die hard "pong" fans that still want more "pong", but the vast majority of gamers has moved on, and Vanguard didnt. THAT is why they are dieing a slow death, and not because of the crap on the official sites and SOE haters.

thats also why their upcomming "relaunch" will die a swift death too. they can relaunch "pong" with al the glitz of hollywood, but people wont stay past the party at launch for very long. no matter how much better their "pong" was than the first time people walked away from it. its failure has less to dowith spit and polish and more to do with "donky kong". "pong" just doesnt do it for them anymore, IF it EVER DID. they have a choice now. shinning up "PONG" will have as much sucess as the last 5 expansions of EQ had for EQ.

Warhammer.

good company. another "pong". name one pvp orientated game that is doing well. DAOC, guild wars, AO, Shadowbane, planetside, AC2, and a few more. some are already dead, the rest will let you download the game for free adn play it for free and only charge you if you want additional expansion content.

Age of Conan.

looks good, but group orientated. mabe they learned and added enough content for mainstream players, mabe they didnt and will die a swift death like Vanguard.

Gods and Heros

looks good. dont know how well that third person group thing will pan out. didnt do that well for never winters night. dont expect it will go over much better unless they change the way the action is presented in some origonal way that is....fun. games that focues on an individual palyers advancement, the whole "hero" thing, tend to be more popular than the creating your own army thing.

those are the three biggies. and even after announcing reaching 9 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS, not a single title geard for the type of player dominiating the market. that is just mindnumblingly insane. are they blind? or just stupid? or mabe they dont really care about money as much as the "vision tm".

well, hopefully one of them will make it and be fun to play. diversity is the spice of life.
