As if being at the hospital til damn near 3a.m, I woke up this morning and noticed that my work laptop wasn't where I left it. In fact, it was no where at all. Just like my personal laptop.

Our ******* house was burglarized last night. Somehow between the hours of about 4a.m. and 7a.m. when I woke up some motherf'cker broke into our apartment and stole both laptops, our change tin, and god knows what else we haven't found.

The police officer just left, he told me that I may as well kiss the laptops goodbye. He also told me that the landlord pretty much lied, in as much as we live in crack ally. Fun that the landlord said that nothing about this, and advertised this as a safe neighborhood. We have 2 kids, and have a baby on the way. What if Jenny had been getting up to go to the bathroom? What if the kids were here?

F'ucking christ.

I feel so damn violated.

To make things worse, every bit of code I'd developed was on that laptop. I never made external backups because I had an internal RAID in the laptop. 2 goddamned years worth of work down the drain.

I'm wondering if there are legal remedies for what the landlords told me... plus they never changed the locks between tenants, and they also never bothered to clean the damn place. Hell, I don't even know if they took the keys from the last tenants.

I don't know what to do... and now I can't find the damn serial number for my personal laptop. Since I don't have renters insurance yet (we moved in TWO WEEKS AGO!) everything is lost. Christ.

You're all safe, hold on to that much.

Also: you should drink.

My sympathies on your stuff being gone. Getting robbed sucks.

But sounds to me like ****-poor planning on your part. How could you not have renters insurance the day you moved in? You wouldn't drive your car around for 2 weeks without insurance would you?

You could have requested the locks be changed the day you moved in. You also bear the brunt of finding out about the nieghborhood. It's not your landlords responsibility to tell you something you should have already found out on your own. "Crack Alley" isn't something that hides very well.

All these things could have been avoided (or at least lessened the chance) if you had some forethought.

Look at it this way, it's a lesson you only have to learn once.

We had to take out a microloan just to make the first months rent. Renter's insurance was something we were planning on after i had gotten my first paycheck. It arrives tomorrow.

The landlords assured us numerous times that the locks were taken care of but they weren't.

In other words, your shoddy with money and apparently don't have the brains to plan ******* ahead. You just about pussied out on making your girlfriend go see the doctor because you didn't have the money. All in all your a leach on society and a drain on our tax money. That about sum it up?

Now, here's what you do. You pull your head out of your *** and get on the ball. You call the land lord, get the locks changed. You then take pictures of all your valuables and have the pictures stored somewhere safe. Then you call and get renters insurance. You start trying to put back as close to 10% of your pay check as you can in savings. You both open IRAs. You start thinking ahead! You have the noodle in your head for more than just producing ear wax! Use it!

You fail at life Scuba.

Exactly how long can you live in debt, and continually get sh'it upon before you do something about it? Everybody goes through a rough patch now and then, you however suffer from everlasting fail. Get a job, if that is not paying the bills get a better one. If you can't do better get a second job. More importantly start living within your limited means. Girlfriend unable to work? Figure out what you can do to get her back to work because it's been way too long short of being paralyzed from the neck down.

Excuses and justifcations are great and all if you want to make yourself feel better but they aren't rectifying the situation, are they.

Jesus Christ, you are a thin skinned *****. If I had known you were going to cry about it like this, I would have robbed your *** sooner.

You failed at life and to top that off you got robbed, I feel for you. We really should have [:worldssmallestviolin:} smiley.

Looks to me like you should have kept your dick in your pants until you were prepared to actually make appropriate life decisions. You have just illustrated in this one thread why your life sucks so badly. You have the planning capacity of a fruit-fly.

On the bright side, you have access to crack, which can work wonders when trying to forget your troubles. If you can't afford it, get that ***** Jenny to blow the dealer. ***** ought to be pulling her weight.

Adapt to your surroundings.

Your pregnant girlfriend needs to go to the hospital and then, that night, you're robbed?

Sounds like an inside job to me. Rough the girl up and see what she knows.

Wait, wait wait. Back this train wreck up. You are 23 with your third child on the way? Yeah, you're a waste of space and so is your girlfriend.

This is the kind of stimuli that drives some men to become millionaires and others to commit suicide.

Work should replace the laptop, talk to your renter's insurance company. There could be a small cluase about moving to a new residence and how quickly you have to update the policy. Probably not, but you never know.

The not changing locks between tenants is a big deal, but doubtful that you would have any legal action.

The big deal is that you are safe, your children are safe, and your wife is safe. The rest of it is nothing but details.

Ok, there seems to be confusion here.
I am 23. My first child is on the way.
My fiance has 2 children from her previous marriage. She is now divorced and with me.

So technically I have no kids. But I still consider them our kids, dig?

It is always an insdide job, someone in your building knows who did it and tipped them off that you were out all night.
If you want what's on the laptop so bad, post a reward for it in the building, and make it worth the money. Also check the local electronics, etc stores that sell "used" laptops, you may be able to buy your own laptop back.

Trust me Neph, I'm not jealous of the **** hole that is his life. Even though I can't have children, at least I'd be better prepared. Even when we were trying we made sure we were in a much more financially secure spot before we decided to try. Call me a redneck stupid ***** all you want, but at least I use the mush between my ears.

Yeah, because we should reward stupidity with huggles and wuv. I don't think so. I do find thievery a horrible act and think those people should be shot on sight, but the rest I'm still leaning towards he's an incompetent ignorant piece of **** who's going to raise another incompetent ignorant piece of **** to continue the cycle of stupidity for the next generation.

Ouch. It sounds like your day was worse than mine. I'll hoist two beers in your laptop's honor tonight after work in the hopes you somehow get them back.
