WTF? Are you implying that the people who hire at my company aren't able to tell when a potential employee can't speak English? Are you serious?

By the way, it's "hire". I only mention it because you keep making the same error.

Well, no. But it was a good shot. It really depends on the union and your relationship with them.

4. bilingual employees in some areas will have an easier time getting a job, thus making it more difficult for someone who ONLY speaks english as their native language to get a job, thus taking MONEY out of their pocket.
Wait. You're pissed that someone with more job skills potentially makes more money in a specific role than someone with less job skills? Part of the job requirements for foreman is be bilingual. If you're not, you're not qualified. It's just that easy.

this is one of the many reasons i HATE unions.
The unions have nothing to do with it. We'd be hiring Hispanics regardless. The union simply assures a minimum wage scale for the workers.

i will state again. if you can not communicate 100% you can not do your job 100%. to have a translator is not the same as communicating your self.
The only person who needs to be communicating with the superintendents are the foremen. That's part of the foreman's job, to lead the work crew, be the guy in charge and to be the middleman between the laborers and the upper levels of management. Laborers can communicate with the foremen "100%". What's the problem?

and yes i know a lot about unions and i do not have to know the exact business you are in to know about them.
And yet you were wrong on so many accounts. Go figure.

Anyway, your concerns about how the labor market in America should operate aside, the simple fact remains that not speaking English isn't necessarily a barrier to making over minimum wage in a legitimate job.

Interesting thread.

I live in Australia and we keep telling ourselves that we're "multi-cultural". We all accept that Sandeep our next door neighbour might have some strange custom... or Hwan our supermarket owner might stock some extra chinese imports.

The problem however, is communication... not culture. Walking into a gas station after filling up my car, the attendant says something in such a thick accent that I can't understand. It was English allright, but it was awwwwfully bad English. At this point, I feel as though I'm within my right to correct his pronounciation, or get angry!

And I do get angry when someone is talking to me in such a strange tone of voice, or accent that I can't understand a word of it. Why should my ears be subject to that noise? I would feel the same way about some white guy stoner outside a club talking to me in such a thick colloquial jargan so I can't understand a word "aaeemaaattediyawannabuysumblunts?" is kinda what you have to listen to. So I'll get angry at anyone... regardless of race for ****** around with my ears and forcing me to translate ****** into regular English.

At the same time, if I see someone trying then I'll be as courteous to them as I am to my own mother.
