Why does Wal-Mart hate Harry Potter?
Quote:

The publisher of the final Harry Potter book has cancelled an order to supply 500,000 copies to Asda supermarkets across the UK.

Bloomsbury said it had taken the decision because it had not been paid by the chain.

But Asda claimed the publisher was unhappy that it had criticised the book's price tag of £17.99.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, the seventh book in the series, is due to go on sale on Saturday.
(Asda is Wal-Mart's UK operation)

£17.99 = $36. Seriously. Who's going to pay that? Most people who want the book at launch pre-ordered from Amazon at half-price

Sadly enough there are people who would pay twice that for the new book.

I never understood that mentality. Just wait a week or two and the prices go down.

Sadly in this day and age waiting two weeks means that you'd have to hide in a dark closet, or by the time you get the book some assclown will already have ruined it for you.

Not only is it the whole shiny mentality, but the ending of the book will probobly be on the 6 o'clock news the following day. There will also be conservative groups claiming that because someone dies, or because someone uses magic, its cursing the world's youth to damnation. I've never even read the prior books and I know that Dumbledore dies.

Kind of ruined it for me.

Sadly if you don't get the book the day it comes out, you probobly aren't going to get to enjoy it as much.

Most big book conglomerates are selling the book at just above cost, they're foregoing profit for the traffic. Smaller book stores are getting their piece of the pie by holding events and such.

I'm guessing Walmart, not really a literary specialty shop, doesn't cater to the HP fans of the world and sells the book for the same prices as all their other books...wholesale x 2.

I ordered online from amazon for $17.99 with 1 day shipping for a little over $17 more, it comes out to to just over $35 and ships July 20, so I get my son the book on July 21, the same day it comes out in book stores.

Untrue. I've withheld getting books like HP the first week or so to wait for the price to drop and Ive never had it spoiled. Then again, I dont watch the news on tv, and stay away from any thread/article about the story until I have read it. Just takes discipline. I do that with anything media-esque Im really looking forward to so it does not get spoiled for me

We (or at least I) are reading this incorrectly. Asda was upset that the pub's were asking the ridiculous price, not that Asda was going to retail it for too much.

Asda said that bloomberg was trying to hold children for ransom

I read this as the pub cancelling the order because ebil WM was trying to charge too much, not the other way around.

You could always, ya know, read books where the payoff comes with the reading of it, not with the cliffhanger resolution or surprise ending.

Baltimore Sun this AM has story about the books ending being revealed on internet.
Some folks report having received their copies already by mail.

Just semi padding my post count

Considering that local newspapers today published the synopsis of the book, even getting the book on the day of release isn't all that safe anymore!

(just check the science and fantasy boards for a view of how book 7 goes, in theory anyway)

Way I heard it, they are selling it at a price equal to cost. (below isn't allowed I believe, not sure though as laws regarding dumping vary)

Ultimately, has HP lead to more kids reading or not? Smaller bookstores lose out as they can't afford selling those books, and other authors suffer as well as HP gets all the attention and sale space.

Meh, it's been a fun ride anyway. And perhaps Rowlings will allow other authors to continue in the HP world so it most likely won't be the end.

Well, from the way the book ends, they have a ton of other books they could write.

Rowlings is such a pathetic sell out. You've made enough money, for **** sake, write an actual ending.
