This morning, on a beautiful sunny California day, I went to the neighboring building to do some studying for my annual checkride coming up soon. This building has a wonderful garden that runs the length of the entire complex complete with a small burbling stream that winds in between coastal redwoods and Japanese maples. Covering the ground are ferns, tiger and Nile lillies, and various cilia that make the place seem like you are deep inside a forest, while only marginally reminding you that you are located deep within an office/hospital campus.

After settling in and reexamining my notes, an annoying odor of cigarette smoke wafted by. I looked around and saw some young medical employee toking rapidly on her heater while jabbering on her cell phone.

While I don't so much mind the cell phone talk, the smell of burning tobacco products definitely was a major downer. Here I was in a semi-idyllic locale, enjoying a man made slice of nature when all of a sudden someone comes by and ruins it with a nasty habit.

My question is this: Since smokers are intent on ruining their health, rather than giving them the most beautiful spot to light up, shouldn't such places as these be reserved for non-smokers? I'm thinking that in accordance with their foul practice they should be given a weedy back alley with broken glass, used rubbers, crack vials, old hypodermic needles covering the asphalt. Then, to give it a touch more atmosphere, pay a few meth whores and homeless people to live there in cardboard boxes so that they can bum cigarettes and make vaguely threatening noises and gestures to these smokers.

It makes no sense that the best places are given to addicts to engage in their chosen vice. Why not give them a place to puff away happily that is more in line with what they are doing to themselves and others?

Ok, that's what I thought. Just checking. By-the-by, I need more fiber in my diet.

Yes you are.

I fully support smoking being banned in enclosed spaces, especially workplaces where non-smokers have to be.

But in the open air, where the smoke is widely dispersed, the only inconvenience is the smell. So you gonna banninate farting, people who ate a garlic-suace with their lunch and old people?

GFY

Ok, farters and garlic eaters aside (s'up, Red and paulsol?), wouldn't a grafitti tagged area next to the dumpster be a more appropo location for cigarette smokers? Placing burn cans and urns in a garden spot just encourages them to light up there, rather in some place like... I don't know, maybe their car? Give the smokers a spot in the direct sunlight of a western and southern facing wall instead of the beautiful dappled sunlight filtered by river birches and redwoods.

It's like saying smokers can have the entirety of the Louvre, but non-smokers get to enjoy the art in the lobby. I say no, if the smokers want to enjoy the best place on the hospital grounds, then do it cigarette-free like the rest of us.

Think of it as trickle down economics, or they have trouble swallowing, trickle out economics. Hey, meth whores and homeless people gotta eat too.

All of which is exactly what I'm saying, Jo. Giving smokers a chance for oral sex in addition to their nicotene fix is like icing on the cake in marketing terms. We sell it that they are getting more instead of less and *Bam!* Problem solved. Everybody's happy.

At our age, the bonus of a stoma bag is that you can git yo' Shit outta bed in the mo'nin', and still have another hour in the sack.

Gotta agree.

I hate that cloud of putrefaction that envelopes you wherenever you walk in or out of a hospital entrance.

Banninig smoking from buildings without extending the ban to the whole Hospital grounds (for example) is akin to allowing people to **** in one half of a swimming pool, bu tnot the other . Sorry Nobster.

As far as the pooh bag goes.....Im not sure what to sphincter that.......

I agree about the haze surrounding the Tobacarazzi outside doorways. Happy for smoking bans to include 25yards of entrances.

Otherwise, fUck off - you're not the boss of me.

Main Entry: cur·mud·geon
Pronunciation: (")k&r-'m&-j&n
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
1 archaic : MISER
2 : a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man

Yep, sounds like you!

I don't like the smell of smoke, but I try to look at it as job security, which after today seems important in an inane mannor!

I probably would have been annoyed but then again that sounds like a smoking spot. It's an outdoor area with-in a building, I bet there's even some ash trays in there right? If there was a sign saying no smoking, then yeah I probably would have walked over and pointed it out to her, but as it is smoking is legal wherever there isn't a sign.

I've been waiting tables for a few years now and nothing is more curmudgeony then someone complaining about smokers when they're sitting in the smoking section. :)
