handheld computer recommendation?Follow

Hi folks my wife wants a handheld device to browse the web, send text messages, and send/receive emails. We'll connect it through our wireless router (I guess the other option is to go through a cellphone network...we're not going that route).

We have a precocious 1.5 year old child, with whom my wife hangs out during the day. So it should be durable. El Cid will pry keys off a laptop keyboard with ease and has such skill locating "on/off" buttons it boarders on the supernatural.

We were visiting friends (also with kids) who have Nintendo DS's, which spawned the idea. The DS has a browser add on but our understanding is that it is very slow; we'd like something faster. And we don't need the games, although she was enchanted with something called "Animal Crossing" (apparently a Nintendo DS and gamecube game only). By the way, if anyone knows of something along the lines of animal crossing for the PC, that would rock.

I'd like to keep it under US$1000 if possible.

Cheers,

Yoyo

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Cingular 8525, or if you want a truly handheld computer, maybe an OQO model 2. Though they are about double your budget there.

You aren't going to get into the ruggedized range in that price range.

I have a Qtek/HTC thing (not sure of the type, because my cell provider branded it and calls it MDA Vario), but It's the one with the sliding keyboard. I like it very much, it's nice and fast (has B and G wifi channels or whatever that's called), and you can shove in a miniSD card (those are fairly cheap)

Edit: I have this one: click

GBA allows me to capture and store live pokemon and share them with my friends. We can even battle with up to four players at the same time!

I'd choose you GBA.

Thanks! So you guys can open a web browser and, say, open gmail on these things rather smoothly?

She's looking at This One

Because it has Windows Mobile and she thinks she'll be able to install an instant messaging client (AIM, yahoo's or skype's would do the trick).

We phoned our local purveyors of high tech goodies and all any of them had was Palm PDAs. It was rather unsatisfying since they didn't have wifi and I'm not sure, but I don't think they had a web browser built in - so we didn't find out how well we could view webpages.
