Wait a minute, wait a minute...there are Jews left in Poland? Schindler's list was such a @#%^ing lie
When I was there in 1996, there were approximately 3000 Jews left in Poland. Before the invasion of Poland in 1939, there were 2 million (there was also a second "purging" of Jews in the late 60s). I knew a Jewish family in Skoczow who were still being harrassed by anti-Semites. I have also heard that there are Jews who are returning to Warsaw.
I have to say, given the history, I was pretty surprised how anti-Semitic people were. I also had some friends who were Protestants b/c I was living in the only area in Poland with a substantial Protestant population and one woman told me that she remembers a friend's grandmother thinking she was possessed b/c she was not Catholic.
Poles are hardcore Catholics--and this is from my vantage point coming from some Italian-American Catholics myself. And it's complicated by the recent history of Communism and how things like civil rights movements were manifested much different as the reds and the white, rather than looking at larger social issues like we did in the 60s in the US.
This kind of sentiment doesn't surprise me. I saw it all the time.
