We were on a cruise last week that stopped in Rome. Since we only had a day and wanted to see as much as possible, we hired a private driver to drive us around and show us the sites. We were assured by the company that he would speak fluent English. Boy was that wrong. This guy's accent made Father Guido Sarducci sound bland.

I was struggling to try to follow what he was saying and only getting about every 3rd word or so. Many things took time to sink in. One word kept coming up over and over -- Cheeser. Why was he going on about cheese so much? It didn't seem like he was talking about food.

Then he started to talk about Cleopatra and her affair with both Mark Anthony and Cheeser, and I finally figured it out. Caesar! That's what it was! Next time I go to dinner I'm definitely ordering the Cheeser Salad.

Joph

You have to visit the best Irish Pub I've ever been to, anywhere (Dublin included).

And make sure Flea is wearing newspaper down the back of her pants. As an ex-girfriend discovered, there are only so many ************* eye-ties a girl can punch in one day.

The problem with a cruise is you only get to see the highlights of a place. Despite his accent, the driver was actually a nice guy and he did drive us to all the major sites, even if we didn't understand most of what he was telling us about them. (That doesn't stop my from being miffed at the tour company) I hope to get back to Rome and spend some more time there. It looked pretty cool, if dirty when compared to say Paris or London.

If you want to see my review of the whole cruise, I wrote one up for cruise critic. http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=30286

That was an interesting read.

A suggestion?

Next time, fly to Paris, hire a car, and use that as your base. There are 5 to 10 European capital cities within a day or so's drive, you are in control of your itinerary, and you'll enjoy the surprises of the road less travelled.

You're clearly an experienced traveller, but if you take the risk of following your nose (even with a 5yo), you'll stumble on ancient sites and places of beauty that don't appear in the brochures.

More importantly, you're likely to meet some bloody nice ordinary folk that aren't as prevalent on the main tourist routes.

We did 5 nights each in Paris and Nice several years ago, and basically did what you suggested. We also did London and Edinburgh a couple years prior to that. While I love cruising, I never really had a desire to cruise Europe before we had a kid because I much prefer immersing myself in the local culture. I liked sitting at a cafe in Paris or a Pub in London just as much if not more than seeing the Eiffel Tower. The reason we took the cruise was basically because it comes with built in babysitting. The couple days we did in Barcelona after the cruise makes me think that was a good choice. As she gets older, we may get more adventurous.

Good Answer!

Well next time you're in the Motherland, let me know and I'll point you and Mrs Allakhazam at the real sights Smiley: sly
