Los Angeles Mayor Acknowledges Relationship With TV Reporter
LOS ANGELES Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is in the midst of divorce proceedings with his wife, acknowledged he is in a relationship with a Spanish-language television reporter, according to a statement published Tuesday.

The mayor and his wife separated last month after 20 years of marriage. Corina Villaraigosa filed for divorce June 12, a day after the mayor told reporters in a City Hall news conference that he took the blame for his crumbling marriage.

At the time, he wouldn't answer whether he was romantically involved with someone else, citing his family's privacy.

But Villaraigosa issued a statement, published Tuesday by the Los Angeles Daily News, acknowledging his involvement with Telemundo newswoman Mirthala Salinas, after the paper told the mayor it was set to publish a story about their relationship.

"It is true that I have a relationship with Ms. Mirthala Salinas. As I've said I take full responsibility for my actions, and I once again ask that people respect my family's privacy. For my part, I intend to stay focused on my job, and to work as hard as I can every day to be the best mayor I can be," Villaraigosa said.

Salinas did not respond to repeated requests from the paper for an interview. Corina Villaraigosa, through the mayor's office, declined an interview with the paper

Telemundo spokesman Alfredo Richard said the station wouldn't comment on employees' personal lives, but described her duties at the station.

He said Salinas moved off the political beat, which includes coverage of the mayor, about 11 months ago. He said her move to backup anchor and general correspondent was intended as an expansion of Salinas' responsibilities at the station.

"We think she is a great reporter and professional," Richard said.

The announcement last month of a split between Villaraigosa and his wife came about four months after the mayor alluded to "ups and downs" in the relationship, amid reports he was spotted without his wedding ring.

In court papers, Corina Villaraigosa cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for ending their marriage.

She seeks spousal support and primary physical custody of the couple's 14-year-old daughter, Natalia, with visitation terms to be worked out with the mayor, according to the filing.

The couple also have an 18-year-old son, Antonio Jr., and the mayor has two adult daughters from previous relationships.

Villaraigosa has carefully tended an image as a devoted family man, but his marriage has shown signs of trouble in the past.

His wife filed for divorce in 1994, but the couple reconciled after a two-and-a-half year split.

Messages left by The Associated Press after-hours with Villaraigosa's office and at Telemundo, whose parent company is NBC Universal, were not immediately returned.

Man, oh, man. These Lib mayors sure take their mentoring seriously. First, the San Francisco mayor Slick Willys his chief of staff's wife on her hubby's desk and now Pancho Villa-eragosa is knocking the bottom out some reporter's cooch with his "Cuban cigar." Ten years after expended DNA on a *****'s dress and libs are still milting the female population other than their wives. Whoda thunk Monica would be such a watershed event in the minds and libidos of Lefties everywhere?

Nah, just another proof that you Pubbies are repressed homosexuals who can't deal with your sexuality.

Well at least there's nothing repressed about it!

Whereas grown men kicking up such a fuss cos the Prez was given a ******** smacks of sexual immaturity to me...

Come on Totem, you can't tell me you were shocked/ashamed/indignant/surprised when you heard the President was getting sexual favours from an intern...

Yes, I was.

Consider it this way: Had I participated in such behavior in my zero tolerance workplace (ie. sexual harassment, drugs, etc.), I'd have been fired. It is akin to a professor making a pass at his graduate student assistent, or a teacher coming on to a student. It's beyond inappropriate, it's the stuff of firings in governmental offices everywhere. Sexual misconduct is verbotten, period, and the man holding our country's highest office was participating in it. Moreso since in his position of authority his actions are precisely those that liberals of the female persuasion often complain about: sexual power politics where a male abuses his office-- yet they didn't make a peep because he was one of them. I guess the rules only apply to Clarence Thomas.

Lefties keep getting it wrong. They continue to think it was just a dust-up about sex between consenting adults. But they miss the point by a country mile because it was workplace sexual conduct. There are specific Federal rules/laws about these things and the nation's chief law enforcement officer ignored them. And then lied about it under oath.

It's hypocrisy.

If I wasn't in love with my girl, I'd happily shag that hottie at work. On the desk, in the stationary cupboard, in the lift... And so would most people.

The only thing that is disgraceful is that she was so fugly.

And, if you work in a place where it not allowed, like Federal office buildings, for instance, you can expect to get fired for doing it on the desk, in the stationary cupboard, in the lift. It matters not that most people would do it if they could, they do do it and subsequently get fired for doing it. As your mother probably asked you when you were younger, "If all your friends jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, does that mean you should do it too?"

Lastly, the president isn't supposed to be "most" people. He is supposed to be better than "most" people. The fact that he isn't doesn't negate the standard to which he is held. After all, if just anybody regardless of their personal predilictions could be President, why not allow felons, foreigners, or dead people hold the office? The guy who presently holds the office is being piloried for being an average guy-- you know, basically incompetant, worthless, and a total *****-up. Yeah, like most of you posters here. But you keep ragging on how he sucks. Huh. Just like all of you. Why not cut him the same slack you give Clinton? Same-same as I see it. They were just ordinary guys doing what ordinary guys do: getting blowjobs at the office, ******** around at work, making a complete mess of the projects they're involved in.

Make up your minds. Either the Prez can be ordinary and be a dip **** like each of you or he is to better than us and not ***** around on the job.

The difference is that "******** with an intern", eventhough it might be illegal, doesn't prevent someone from doing their job. If anything, it's stress relief.

Having an IQ of 12 and an inability to speak one's native tongue, on the other hand, poses more problems.

Well anyway, I do get your point, and deep down i don't fundamentally disagree.

I'm sure this has been debated a million times already on this forum, and i'd rather we end this conversation before "Teh Gabji" wakes up...

I was more concerned about Clintons' initial denial about the affair, than the actual fact that one occurred.

In a week, no one will remember the Gore v3.0 story any longer and your sock puppet name will seem really dumb.

Also, Gore Jr. was Clinton's VP. The one recently arrested was Al Gore III.

I'm not so sure many of you understand that. 20,000+ posts is quite a bit of time anyone who posts that much is obviously disconnected from reality. Just look at the uproar some of you had over Libbys sentence being commuted (taking into account Clintons pardons); or doth I protest too much?
