I think the point was that this is how it is right now by default if we do nothing. This applies to the silly stances held by both sides.

Why not come up with a set of rules to manage those things in a way that doesn't require that our border(s) be saturated with people crossing illegally just so they can get jobs. Gasp! Wouldn't it make securing the border from those we might really be concerned about much much easier if we could find a way to take the "poor people just looking for a job" out of the equation? Yeah. I think it would...
Sadly, our leaders are so entrenched in their positions that they can't see this.
