Well, that's that. It's doubtful that a "security only" bill will pass through the chambers and comprehensive reform is dead until the next person takes the White House. So at least a few more years of same ole, same ole.

This'll be a ***** for Bush -- I'm sure he'd have liked to ended his term on a note other than Iraq.

While I had my doubts about the fairly byzantine avenues proposed for attaining citizenship or work visas, I thought the bill was better than what we have now.

Oh well.

Cheap sources of labour without any pesky labour laws intefering with unethical business practices.

Of course the bill was never going to go through.

I think the point was that this is how it is right now by default if we do nothing. This applies to the silly stances held by both sides.

Amnesty? Um... What do you think is happening now?

Cheap labor? Ditto.

Why not come up with a set of rules to manage those things in a way that doesn't require that our border(s) be saturated with people crossing illegally just so they can get jobs. Gasp! Wouldn't it make securing the border from those we might really be concerned about much much easier if we could find a way to take the "poor people just looking for a job" out of the equation? Yeah. I think it would...

Sadly, our leaders are so entrenched in their positions that they can't see this.

Well, you could always build a giant fence.

It worked pretty well for Israel, and the Berlin Wall was pretty solid too.

Then the country would be one giant gated community!

How awesome would that be?!

Fence, schmence...

What we need is to dig a 250' wide trench from the Gulf to the Pacific, at least a hundred feet deep so we have a good moat going. As an added benefit, we could lease it as a canal (in your face, Panama!). Just try swimming across to the US with a freighter bearing down on you, Pedro!

Since they failed to change the law doesn't that mean they should start enforcing it?

Sorry but holding border security hostage for amnesty is wrong. After the 1986 immigration bill many people don't trust the feds to follow through on their promises to secure the border and then we will again be 3 times worse off in another 21 years. Amnesty first failed once, maybe trying something else will actually work.

Then some ******* will propose we become a homeowners' association and the next thing you know there are fees, some asshat will be telling me what color to paint my house and I'll have to pay them three times what I pay Jesus to mow my lawn. No thank you.

Fixed because the universe demanded it.

EDIT: Because I failed 3rd grade spelling.

You think homeowners' associations are good? I know Pubies will say anything to contradict something they see as liberal, but damn Gina.

It's been a while since we've used typos as fodder. DOesn't that break one of our sainted phorum laws?

As for the bill, it's a shame in one respect, because we really can't ignore the population, but it's nice to know I have job security for a while yet. I predict a rush for the border now that the eye of Sauron won't be on them for a while.
