I hope I'm wrong, but I have a bad feeling about this.
Me too.
When it was first mentioned earlier in the week, my first thought was, "no way can that be seen as anytyhing other than a **** take. but by tuesday, it was being talked about as if it was foregone, and by today its a done deal!
Its almost as if its being done on purpose, to goad the ME into a negative reaction.
Its on par (IMO) with the ridiculous situation that nearly led to Zimbabwe being given the rotating leadership of the 'human rights' organisation in africa. (or was it sudan? I forget now).
As you say, while Tony Bleah had some considerable successes in Northern Ireland (to his great credit), whilst in office. (Tho if the Brits ahd bombed Belfast with a 'Shock and Awe' campaign I think things would have been somewhat different there),I cant see anything good come from this. The Israelis see him as an ally, and like him for it, the palestinians dont trust him for the very same reason. And contrary to popular belief, the ongoing conflict between the palestinians and the Israelis is the #1 cause of strife in the ME.
And after his sorry ***** showing with his decision to support Bush's idiotic crusade, (and to still refuse to see it as anything other than a 'noble pursuit'), i cant see your average resident of the ME see his appointment as anything other than a continuation of the Bush/Blair policy in a slightly altered form.
As far as what next goes.... Probably our resident Right Wing Defence Force will be along to explain how its all a liberal stitch up.
