First the roller coaster stops upside down for 30 minutes, now this happens.

Girl's feet severed on ride at Six Flags in Kentucky

(CNN) -- A girl's feet were cut off Thursday when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, police said.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the "Superman Tower of Power," a police dispatcher said. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

An unidentified witness told CNN affiliate WLKY she saw a cable on the ride snap.

"The people on the ride just came and hit the ground," she said. "When I got up there, the lady she was just sitting there, and she didn't have no legs. ... And she was just there, calm, probably in shock from everything."

"That could have been all of us -- riding that ride," witness Whitney Sandfer told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO.

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride in question was shut down and will remain so until the full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

During the ride, passengers are lifted to 177 feet, suspended momentarily and then dropped, according to the park's Web site.

Passengers drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," it adds.

"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke, I heard -- pwchh -- and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Superman Tower of Power, told WDRB/WMYO.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," Stinnett said.

The ride was introduced in 1995.

Next thing you know, there will be shark attacks in Mass beaches. Maybe I'll just stay home at my computer where it's safe, instead of enjoying summer acitivities

I hear ya DSD, those two, then the water park in my town, one of the biggest waterslides had a piece fall with an 11 year old girl on it, miraculously she wasn't injured badly. There's other things, but damn too many incidents too close together for my comfort zone.

It was God's way of punishing sixteen year old girls for riding Superman's "tower of power".

From what I know, nothing has happened at the theme park I usually go to (Busch Gardens Europe), so I think I'll probably keep going to that. The park that I'm most uncomfortable with is King's Dominion, for it seems less safe than Busch.

I've seen written both that she was 13 or 16. Not sure which is correct, but really... how does something like this happen... if you've ridden one of these things I can't even imagine how it would be possible...

Edit: I guess I hadn't read this article on CNN yet, I had only read that tehy were still investigating what happened.

Apparently in your reading of two articles, you missed the part where they said a cable snapped and then wrapped around her legs.

it's ok, normally I don't pick on people so much because I can't be bothered, but today I'm procrastinating, and it's Friday.

I heard about it when it had just happened so I didn't know how old she was, but since it was a drop ride I assumed she wasn't a little girl. Someone in chat mentioned they'd suffer through that for the money since they can probably re-attach her feet. I say the hell with that. I'll keep my feet right where they are and my sanity as well. Don't care how much money it is, my mind would break seeing my feet ripped off.

Well lets see, there was the Big Bad Wolf getting stuck before it entered the station (for those that don't know, you're about 30' off the ground at this point) this past Oct, then there was an incident with the Loch Ness Monster, where a kid had his arm broken, nevermind Drachen Fire (closed a couple years ago) that caused whiplash in several people, lest we forget Fabio and the goose on Apollo's Chariot, then there are the injuries in the Land of the Dragons, but I'd imagine that wouldn't rate high, because most of those could happen at a playground, oh, and my ex claims to have had a rock hit her ankle on Alpengiest, not that I believe that one, she's a chickenShit.

These acidents are freakish, but nothing when compared to the overall usage stats. You actual chance of being injured on a theme park ride is rather low. I wouldn't worry about it, just have fun.
