Hmmm... He's not a native English speaker. He immigrated to this country. He learned to speak English (ok. Kinda). He's managed to become wealthy, famous, and is now the Governor of California.
Erm, he was fairly famous and wealthy as an athlete before moving to America and had patrons here in the States willing to capitalize on their involvement with the Mr. Universe winner.

I imagine you'll deny there's any difference but, whatever.

Not in the context of the importance of learning the language of the land you're living in and the best way to go about doing that, no.

I'm reasonably certain that had he not put the effort forth to learn English, his film career would have ended at Hercules in New York. He might certainly have managed to get by on his past as a bodybuilder, but he definately would *not* have achieved the level of fame and success he has today if he had not learned to speak English.

I remember that in grade school he was the guy in the guiness book of world records with the funky name. And that's likely the only thing he'd ever have achieved. Certainly, he's got some insight on the subject matter, don't you think?

Pretty remarkable that he was in the Guiness book due to his name.

He was in it for his bodybuilding title. IIRC, the record was something like "most perfect body" or something like that.

Point being that the *only* reason any of us remembered or noted him was because of his name. Had he not gone on to a successful film career, we'd likely not even remember that much. Maybe we'd see his name on a gym or on a late night workout advertisement and think "Hey. Isn't that the guy that was in the world record book 30 years ago?". Maybe...

The point being that he had considerably more luxury in accomplishing that than your typical migrant farm worker or factory drone.

I'm sure if you took Typical Mexcian Immigrant #4577 and said "We're gonna set you up with a wad of starting scratch and give you a support network of English speakers who want to work with you because now you're famous", they'd learn English faster as well.

Again, I largely agree with Schwarzenegger but the "See? He did it!" comparison is just silly.

It is not silly. Here's a guy who was already successful and still managed to learn it. Why wouldn't an impoverished worker trying to get his family finances secure have even more motivation?

Granted he has more time on his hand, but if Guadalupe and Hermadildo have enough time to crank out 8 kids, they could learn some English.

Perhaps a couple more social programs and another couple of truckloads of tax dollars could be thrown at it. That would definitely help.

Nice try at shining us on about how Ahnold couldn't have arrived where he is today except through the patient and gentle ministrations of "patrons" willing to invest in his future, Jo. Yeah, and I bet they lifted those weights for him too.

Face it, he is where he is because he dedicated himself to becoming Americanized-- so much so, he has become a cultural icon. It didn't require him to lose his accent, but it most certainly required him to learn the language and embrace Americana, even if it's Hollywood's version of it.

Messicans intent on holding on tightly to their culture and remaining Mexican is a self-defeating attitude-- unless your aspirations include working in fields all the live long day. If that's the case, more power to ya. Just don't invite Pedro and Paco, your illegal and illiterate cousins up here. We got enough of 'em.

You dumb gringos kill me. If your job sent you to France, and you could live in a US compound, would you learn French? It all boils down to this: They feel there's no need to learn it. These are people who are convinced they'll only be here a short while and aren't going to take up valuable childrearing or working time to learn a language that they don't feel they'll have a use for. They live in culturally isolated communities, and the places they bank and shop and eat are all in their language of origin. This isn't only true of Hispanics, BTW. Many other cultures fall into this, Indian, Polish, Russian, Arabs. By the time they've realized they're not going anywhere, most do try to learn English, but it's a slow process that takes time. Ever try to learn another language enough to feel confident? I took six years of French and it is, at best, conversational. I couldn't write a resumé or understand a diagnosis.

Keep in mind this is not a static migration. Just as you have people that have been here seven years and just now decided to buy their Inglés Sin Barreras DVDs, there are also new folks just starting this journey. It gives the illusion that no Hispanics assimilate into the culture when that is not true. Many do.

why should they?

we STOLE half of their country. and right under your noses, they are taking it back one imigrant at a time. ROFL, why should they learn english? over half of San Antonio and Corpus Christy is already mostly mexican. Houston is around 30 percent, Dalas is the last big hold out.

California will be the last to fall.

learn english? ROFL, the MINORITY Anglos and Brothers need to learn spanish. in another 10 years or so, the predominate language spoken in Texas will be spanish, and within 50 years after that, so will California.

their taking back what we took from them, one immigrent at a time.

and what are we doing? sqealing like a stuck pigs at all the spanish being spoken and fighting over making the fence they have to climb a little higher.

whos the dummy?

another good point. all the fuss us gringos are raising about non-english speaking immigrants, and yet, who do we hire to do labor for us? to we stick to our principals and look for bonafied americans to do menial labor?

nope.

i just got back from a weeks vacation in San Antonio. farms every where. grapes, foods of all sorts. even went to a "private hunting reserve" (legal name for place to kill exotic animals of all sorts for a price). every last one of them had mexicans working in their fields. even the hunting reserve used them to feed the animals, clear brush, and just about everything the lazy **** gringos soaking up the commisions as hunting guids didnt feel like doing. they spent their time soaking up beer in the lodge waiting around for evening to come so they can take their clients out to butcher animals as they gathered at the feeding stations or watering holes.

BTW, you wana know why they make you crawl on the ground and sneak up on the animals they hunt? because if you stood up the animals would see you and walk up to you to be hand fed. just wouldnt be the same. so they go out at night and "sneak up" to the critters their clients pay anywhere from 6000 to 60,000 dollars to shoot.

ROFL, the great white hunter. just as lazy as the rest of the gringos in this country.

no one wants to stop illegal immigration. its just sound bite material during election time.

According to that logic, shadow, the redskins need to rise up and reclaim reclaimed land from the Mexicans. then things will have been set aright. Until then, those Mexxies are just another forked tongue devil intent on stealing what isn't theirs.

Lemmesee if I can summarize.

-OP: Arnold thinks that you should immerse yourself in English-speaking culture to give yourself the best chance in U.S.
-You: Everyone is a gringo
-You: I took six years of French and I'm not confident with it
-You: I didn't catch the whole concept of IMMERSION

Look, I'm not trying to make a straw man argument here. But you don't even realize: you're essentially arguing the same thing that Arnold was saying. I'll even put your contrary arguments next to one another.

Fact is, you're right. If you want to get ahead in the U.S., learn English. Fact is, Arnold is right, you learn it exponentially faster if you just cold-turkey immerse yourself in the culture.

Well. To be fair, a pretty high percentage of Mexicans have native blood in them, so that argument's a bit... odd.

But then, so do I, so get outta my country you thieves!!! ;)

No, you can't. My whole point, you dumbass, is that acculturation/assimilation are processes that take time, and they occur regardless of any law passed. The misconception regarding Hispanics as strictly monolingual is what you a call a changing paradigm. People who get their panties in a bunch about it need to take Sociology 101.
