Or something like that...

Seriously though, props to a govenor for actually challenging anyone to do something about their own plight, rather than continue to overstress the schools or the public sector.

I did like the quote stating that the Mexicans were too busy working to learn Enlgish.

His assumption is that they're like himself - that they want to be permanent residents. That's true for some, but certainly not all.

I tend to like Ahnold, though. He speaks his mind, trips himself up, and charms his way out of trouble. Just like the movies!

There is something appealing about a leader who isn't afraid to act as he should and then doesn't try to slime his way out.

I'm sure that most of the people on this board would agree to that.

I don't entirely disagree with him. Certainly immersion is one of the quickest ways to learn a language if only out of sheer necessity.

The problem comes from what you miss in the time it takes for you to learn the new language. I doubt many Hispanics are willing to isolate themselves from the news, entertainment, literature, etc until they've picked up enough English to get the American version. Worse so for staring blankly at the board in school for months on end until you learn enough English to actually, you know, start learning something.

So he's correct although I doubt many would willingly take it to an extreme.

I had to laff at all the gasps in the Hispanic audience who were appalled that that white man standing up front was demanding they give up their cultural identity and stop watching Sabado Gigante!

RACK making English as our national language and refusing to accept bilingualism as a solution. Who do they think we are? El Quebec-o?

This pinko liberal maintains that any immigrants need to learn the indigenous language if they want to reap the benefits of their hosts.

Shock Horror!

I particularly loved this one:

Quote:
"I'm sitting shaking my head not believing that someone would be so naive and out of it that he would say something like that," Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, said Thursday.

Hmmm... He's not a native English speaker. He immigrated to this country. He learned to speak English (ok. Kinda). He's managed to become wealthy, famous, and is now the Governor of California.

But he's "naive and out of it" when it comes to how to successfully integrate into the US as a foreign non-english speaker. Um...

C'mon, gbaji! You gotta understand their plight as downtrodden and poorly paid labor. You have to empathize with their need to maintain a cultural identity. You need to commiserate with them on the difficulty of following English language television shows like "Survivor" and King of Queens.

You must be one of those cold hearted Republican bastards who don't recognise their unique snowflakiness, man. That's just wrong, dude.

Yeah. And if they learn English and integrate into US society and culture, then they wont think of themselves as an underclass, and how on earth will we ever be able to get large crowds to show up at rallys and protests?

Think of the "cause"...

It is a good thing you are too ignorant to be ashamed of your own insecurities as a country.

No, I just don't want to see the States go the route of Canada and their appeasement of the Francophiles. I live in California, not Mexifornia.

Yeah, cos California's such an English sounding place.

Even naming their towns after the quaint English villages of 'Los Angeles', 'San Diego' and 'San Francisco'

Makes me so proud that we left our English Heritage behind. Now I'm off to the village pub for traditional Tacos and a bottle of warm Corona.

You say insecurity, I say functionality.

Look, you either create a working symbiotic relationship with the bacteria or it exponentially procreates and overruns the host, ultimately leading to its own demise.

Erm, he was fairly famous and wealthy as an athlete before moving to America and had patrons here in the States willing to capitalize on their involvement with the Mr. Universe winner.

I imagine you'll deny there's any difference but, whatever.

Emigrated to, not immigrated to. Or, alternately, immigrated from.

So when are *you* going to learn English?

Er... no.

Emigrate: leave one's country of origin. Immigrate: adopt a new home country.

E- out. Im- in.

If that was the case, each disease would die out after one person.

In reality, it over runs its host and spreads to other hosts who were in contact with the initial victim. You hear that, Canada? Once we go down, you're next to fall to the Mexican scourge!!!

Being ignorant means that I have no clue what a **** hole this place is going to become as we establish our lovely mini countries inside the borders and then try to function.

We have enough issues already without diverting our tax dollars to Mexico ala Western Union.
