Hah. The most pulsepounding experience in EQ had to be my very first Fear raid. It was waaaaay back in the day and for some reason I still don't understand (something to do with more roamers near west wall at the time), the raid leader decided to do a north wall break. Realize that this was my first ever planar raid. I didn't know where I was going or why, but I ran to the north wall keeping the big wall'o'fire to my right. Somehow I managed to actually make it and /camp. Still don't know why. I could actually see mobs running around from place to place tearing people to bits. That was "scary". Very very scary...
Naggy raids were cake in comparison. Actually, the most stressful single raid opponent I ever fought was aardarsomething in NToV. Just in terms of duration of fight. I never actually did the highest end Velious/Luclin content, so that was about the longest I ever did. Later expansion raids were usually about dealing with programmed adds and whatnot during the fight, but the fights themselves were typically not that long. I just remember spending *forever* to defeat that sucker. Got him on the first attempt though, so that was good.
/agree on the FV->LoIO run. The spiders had big agro ranges, half of them could see through invis, they were often "hidden" in the little nooks and crannies of the terrain, they ran super fast (sow speed) and could root. Oh. And they were level 30ish smack between where you landed when arriving in Kunark and the major zone for levels 10-20. Go figure!
Also /agree on the "falling in befallen". I did that at like level 17. I remember spending a ridiculously long time trying to get sufficient help to recover my corpse. Long enough where I was actually starting to worry about corpse rot. That was "not fun". Afterall, I had all my incredibly groovy leather and bronze stuff! And a mino axe!!!
Heh. I've really got to say that in terms of "scary" EQ still has every other game beat hands down. In single player games you can always reload, and very few mmorpgs have/had the "cost" to dying that EQ had. So when you got that sick feeling in your stomach when everything went to heck, huge train, mobs agroed from the wrong areas, the bard saying "let me try this new song..." you *knew* it was bad. Very very bad...
