More money..Follow

#1 Jun 12 2007 at 8:57 AM Rating: Default
Hey..

I'm a 20 year old college student, ATM.

If I can't figure out how to bring in more money, I'm going to be a homeless college student. Well, it's not that bad but it feels that way sometimes.

I work 8-10 hours a day, 3 days a week at one job. And I'm currently in the process of talking to this other employer to see if they will employ me during my other free times (either evenings or weekends). I was even thinking about getting a third job but that might do me in mentally, not to mention cut out of my study time.

I've been searching the web like a mad-man checking out every site I could. I just can't seem to find any reasonable ways to make money in my free-time. All those "work at home" things look like a terrible waste of time and effort. And I still don't understand making money off of blogs and other internet related things.

I've been trying to get ahold of the center where people can donate plasma for cash but it seems like an unusually long and awkward process for pretty small pay. I'll end up doing it anyway, though..

It seems like the only thing I can do currently is work for hourly pay and wait for my check every 2 weeks. Isn't there more I can do? Do you have any things you do on the side to bring in some extra cash?

Aim higher than working at 7-11.

I know your father told you couldn't do better but you probably could, maybe.

How much money do you really need to make as a 20 year old college student? Seriously?

Assuming you aren't actually paying tuition, your costs should be minimal. Share a place with roomates or live at home if you can. The only expenses you should really have to worry about are food and rent. 25-30 hours a week, even at near minimum wage should still be plenty for that assuming you are living frugally.

If you are paying tuition and are serious about getting a degree (ie: you're not a screwup who's going to drop out in a year), get yourself a GSL. The "G" stands for guaranteed and it's the best loan deal you'll ever get in your life.

Dunno. I found that time of my life to be the easiest in terms of finances. I didn't have much, but I didn't need much.

That's a pretty big assumption, don't you think?

I just want more money in the bank in case something happens.

I don't have anything to fall back on. I can't run to my parents for money if my car breaks down, or I get hit by a bus, etc.

It sounds like you need to focus more on your spending rather than your earning. Develop a budget.

I don't think I ever had more than a hundred bucks in the bank in college. If I had, I would have spent it on beer, most likely.

Good advice but not what I'm looking for.

I am hella good with saving money. I even leave my beautiful Prelude sitting in the parking lot, very lonely, just to take the bus to school.

I do, however, spend too much money keeping her clean :-/

I'm not sure what you're looking for, really. Everyone is broke in college, in my (limited) experience. Even the people whose parents paid for everything were on allowances.

I dunno, drug dealing pays well, I hear.

Well there's a point: why do you have a car you don't need? I got rid of my car when I was in college. In fact, I waited until I wanted to have kids to get one and took the bus. That saved quite a bit.

$25 per donation of plasma. Some offices give a bonus if you give twice in one week.

That could net a couple hundred per month.

What Nexa said.

Sell the car is my advice.

My usual consultancy rate is £850 per day - just deduct that from what you make on the car and I'll be fine.

Kthnx

Ok, so how to make more money in your free time while in college:

1. Charge per page/per word/whatever to type other people's papers for them. Extend your offer of service to faculty, they have ****** handwriting.
2. Yardwork, you can plan it on your own time. Same goes for housework/painting/landscaping/etc.
3. Babysitting if you're qualified.
4. Tutoring if you're good at anything.
5. If you're tech savy, design websites/powerpoints/presentations/whatever for a fee.

All of these are under the table and therefore, you can charge less an hour than you would take for a "real" job and still make more.

I would love to sell my car, but I'd have no way to get to work.

I go to school Tues/Thurs and that's it. Every other day I have to drive places the bus doesn't go. And this is Columbus, Ohio, so we don't have a tram or anything of the sort. Only limited bus routes and expensive taxis.

Are you living at home? If not, why not move to an apartment closer to one location or the other and along the bus route?

Columbus averages 2 to 3 liquor stores per block; I'm sure knocking one over wouldn't be too much hassle.

I actually moved near school just for this reason. Also, mainly because the apartments near my work are sooo overpowered.. I mean, expensive.

If you can get federal workstudy funds, I would also highly recommend getting a job on campus (or through another workstudy eligible employer). While the pay won't be any different, you don't pay FICA when working during a semester you are taking classes (including the summer if you take a summer class). This can be a fair chunk of change. Additionally, they deduct it from what they consider your "earnings" for the year on the following year's FAFSA, meaning that hopefully you'll get a higher award for the following year since it looks like you made less.
