New York Times wrote:
The eight-hour stop — Mr. Bush left Rome in the morning and was headed to Sofia, Bulgaria, on Sunday night — made him the first sitting American president to visit this former Communist state. He told the Albanians what they wanted to hear — that he supported their effort to join NATO and wanted independence soon for Kosovo, a largely ethnic Albanian breakaway province of Serbia — without making any fresh commitments.

"At some point in time, sooner rather than later, you’ve got to say, 'Enough is enough — Kosovo is independent,' " Mr. Bush said. He said any plan to extend talks on Kosovo, like the one proposed recently by President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, must end with "certain independence."

The future of Kosovo is of paramount interest here; some Kosovo residents traveled to Tirana to join the crowd. The United Nations Security Council is considering a plan for independence, but Russia objects. On Saturday in Rome, the president agreed that there should be a deadline to end the United Nations talks, saying: "In terms of a deadline, there needs to be one. It needs to happen."

But on Sunday, Mr. Bush tried to backtrack when asked when that deadline might be. "First of all, I don’t think I called for a deadline," Mr. Bush said, during a press appearance with Mr. Berisha in the courtyard of a government ministry building. He was reminded that he had.

"I did?" he asked, sounding surprised. "What exactly did I say? I said deadline? O.K., yes, then I meant what I said."

By all accounts, Albanians have an affection for the United States born from the whole "liberation from the *****" thing. I'm not sure how many generations that's good for but (again, from what I've read & heard) they seem to still have a deep appreciation for the sacrifices the US made to free their country.

Not Shrub, in general, but they have much love for the US as a whole. The **** thing, the Serb-Kosovo thing, etc. We are the Great Liberators!

What I found awesome is how the NY Times managed to write a story about a trip by Bush to this country and *still* managed to find a way to spin it negatively... twice. Gotta love predictibility...

I wouldn't say that portraying Bush as a congenital idiot is "spin". That's really as straightforward as you can get.

Where's the "spin"? Are you denying that Bush said what he did? Or are you simply attempting to defend it?

The only predictability around here is your continued defense for an indefensible dropkick.

'Bush' is just another name for an 'cnut'. (to stay with the predictable theme....)

Hehe, I laughed when I saw Bush's trip to Albania on TV.

For those of you that don't know the intracacies of Europe's xenophobic prejudices, Albania is the shithole of our continent. Albanians are derided everywhere as being people traffickers, the successful ones, or muggers, the rest. They are pretty much hated everywhere, and are synonimous with poverty, crime, and illiteracy.

So, yes, I couldnt help but smile when I saw Albania was the only country left in Europe where he would be welcome as a, well, erm, nope, just "welcome" full stop.

Of coruse, I just want to point out that I don't share my fellow European's prejudices about those dirty thieving Albanians scums, and I don't doubt that for one second that many Albanians are very nice and prosperous and literate.

They just don't live in Albania anymore.

Where's the "spin"?

Well, the fact that they went looking for something negative to write about would be a start.

How about the way this interchange occured:

Quote:
On Saturday in Rome, the president agreed that there should be a deadline to end the United Nations talks, saying: “In terms of a deadline, there needs to be one. It needs to happen.”

The article isn't clear who he agreed to. But that means that he didn't propose it, but agreed with someone else saying it. Perhaps a reporter asking him something like "Do you agree that the UN ought to set a deadline on these talks?".

Think so? Probably.

But then we get this:

Quote:
But on Sunday, Mr. Bush tried to backtrack when asked when that deadline might be.

Ah. Say it aint so! He tried to backtrack!!!. Gasp!

Note, that (once again) the article doesn't say who asked him this question (another reporter perhaps? You think? Yeah... I do!). But he was asked when that deadline might be. Um... Not to be obvious, but he didn't propose the deadline he just agreed that it "needs to happen". He obviously wasn't speaking of any specific timeline, but speaking in general. So not having a specific deadline in mind is *not* backtracking.

Ah you say! But read the quotes! Ok. Let's:

Quote:
“I did?” he asked, sounding surprised. “What exactly did I say? I said deadline? O.K., yes, then I meant what I said.” The reporters laughed.

"I did?". Ok. What did he "did"? Did he say he'd set a deadline? Or did he say that he thought one needed to be set? Depending on the question that was asked, this answer may or may not be that silly. Presumably the words "I did?" did not immediately follow a question like "Mr. President, when time exactly do you have in mind for the deadline to the UN talks about Kosovo?". We don't know what the president said in response to that question (the one paraphrased earlier), nor what the reporter (or whoever) actually claimed that the president said.

There are at least two lines of dialogue left out in between those two bits. One has to wonder why the actual question he was answering was left out. I'll also point out that the final quote there is presented as one solid bit of text, yet clearly he asked a question must have gotten an answer and then continues on. It would have been handy to know what the person asking the questions actually said in order to have context with regard to his answer. Certainly, writing it as a single long quote when it's *obvious* that it wasn't is a bit disengenous.

Clearly, the purpose of the quote is not to inform but to find something that can be made to appear embarrasing to the president. Hence, it's spin. If the exchange was that obviously amusing and stupid (on the presidents part) why not include the full quotes instead of skipping around? Why merge several statements into one quote? You found the quotes amusing the way they were written. Presumably that was the intent...

I'll also point out the line "Even the war in Iraq is popular here". Hmmm... Implied meaning: "These guys love Bush, but they think the war is ok, so that shows you how stupid and backwards they are...".

Even has it's own paragraph. Gotta love that. Gotta also love the one quote they use to support that. I'm sure it's not coincidence that it's hitting a significant Dem talking point (that the US is trying to be the worlds police). They couldn't find a single person to quote that said that this war was important because the US was standing up against terrorism and that this is important? Nope. They use the guy who says that the US has a "right and responsiblity" to protect the world's freedom. Manifest Destiny tie in? Nah. That would be too obvious...

Final spin (there were actually three in there) is the bit about the Albanians being upset that he didn't stop and give them a speech right there on the street. Yeah. Afterall, gotta find some reason why the Albanians aren't happy with Bush's visit. If the best we can do is complain that he didn't stop and give an extra speach, well, that's the best we can do now isn't it?

The spin in this article is heavy and thick. Afterall, it's damage control from the NY Time's perspective. They don't want anyone to think that anybody from any other nation actually likes Bush's polices. That would violate the "everyone in the world hates us!" argument and that just can't be had. Gotta make them Albanians look silly, make Bush look silly, and make sure that even they don't really like him that much cause he's not willing to talk to them or something...

So basically, you know shit about what happened but figure that you can make up some background to put it in a better light because poor ole Bush said something dumb and got laughed at.

Hey! Speaking of "spin"...
