You can't get a bigger rush than this

Quote:
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A dozen riders on a roller coaster spent half an hour hanging upside down — 150 feet above the ground — after a power outage shut down the attraction.

It took about 30 minutes for the city Fire Department to rescue the riders using a ladder truck Saturday evening, said Aundrea Crary, spokeswoman for the Springs & Crystal Falls amusement park.

Spectators cheered when the riders were brought to the ground from the highest point of a loop on the X-Coaster, but one passenger threw up after reaching safety.

The X-Coaster was one of several rides brought to a halt by the outage that originated somewhere near the park.

"You could tell who got off the (X-Coaster) because their faces were red," said Angela Salter. She was riding the Gauntlet, another coaster, and said park employees worked quickly to free her.

The park resumed normal operations, although the X-Coaster remained closed.

One X-Coaster passenger, Jay Plummer, 37, was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Medical Center in Hot Springs after complaining of neck pain and a headache.

"It was very scary," said his girlfriend, Connie McBride. "I love the amusement park, but I will never get on the X-Coaster again."

The park has experienced outages before, but usually they last only seconds, said Dan Aylward, Magic Springs president and general manager.

Entergy Corp. was investigating but crews found no faulty wiring.

"The cause could be a (tree) limb or as simple as an animal (on the lines)," said Mark Hunt, general manager of customer service for Entergy. "We could find no faults, but we are going to continue to investigate until we find the cause."

I'm a thrill seeker myself, but I'm unsure if I would be able to "get back in the saddle again" if I were to experience something like this. For the rest of you thrill seekers, would this enhance your thrill or scare you off coasters?

I don't know why, but I was expecting this thread to be about drink coasters. Now the cocoa table stain post i was going to make would make even less sense than before.

As if it wasn't a big enough chore to get my friends to go with me on Batman already.

I really don't see this as a big deal. Of all the things that could go wrong on a coaster such as standing up too high and get slammed in the face by a support beam or your seat straps failing, this is certainly the most tame.

Now the possibility of the harness crushing one's jublies as he hangs upside down for half an hour, that's frightening.

I'd probably ride it again, once they fixed things. Shit happens, it's life. As long as this wasn't a frequent occurance or anything, all it'd become would be just another piece of my life.

Only thing holding you down is an uncomfortable red box on a pole.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Here I was thinking about how incredibly boring I am, but at least I'm not alone.

Of course, combined with not knowing what "drifting" is, I may still be ahead on the uncool-meter.

An occurrence like this would keep me off the coaster for the immediate future. In time I would return, and ride it again.

I was trying to picture what a 150 foot view would be like. I can't even be up in buildings that high and stand near the windows. Not that I'd EVER be on a roller coaster like that, but if I were, and that happened, I'm relatively sure that I'd die on the spot.

I too thought it would be about drink coasters. I dunno, it was DSD, I figure with all the coffee you must know a lot about them.

I'm shocked, shocked, I say, that you guys automatically think of drink coasters instead of roller coasters. Are there really a lot of people out there who love drink coasters? I never seem to give them much thought, let alone think to post about them.

I think it's mostly that I call a rollercoaster a rollercoaster and a drink coaster a coaster.

I just said coaster too many times and it has now lost all meaning.

coaster.

Oh, I'm not saying I wasn't surprised that you'd be posting about drink coasters. But eh, people collect all kinds of things.

I do the same with shampoo. It's just one of those words if you say it often enough it loses meaning and just sounds sillier than it usually does.
Shampoo
Shampoo
Shampoo

I guess Im not refined enough with the drink coasters. I dont think I've owned any in years. A coaster to me has always been a roller coaster. Im so hickville

I didn't think electricity was used on roller coasters other than to haul the cars up to the top. Once released it was all gravity and momentum keeping it going?

Apparently I'm wrong since this happened. Smiley: frown

qft

I was really hoping there had been some large advancement in drink coaster technology that I had not heard of yet. I have a really nice set of Jameson's coasters in addition to the usual stock of sandstone, cork, and cardboard bar coasters. I've never been a big fan of the marble ones, they have a tendency to scratch up my coffee table. Smiley: motz
