Just goes to prove that you are a moron. That and no one should have a car with that much power for their first vehicle.

What the fuck would you know about mature adults?

Huggles.

Not real familiar with cars, I see. A 1980 mustang had about as much power as a Chevy Avaeo does today.

Spent my childhood pretty poor. As I got older, my parents had money. They bought me nice clothes, the best toys, and a horse. They would have bought me a car, but I preferred to purchase my own, with my own money. I don't really believe that you honestly think they should buy this kid a new BMW so much as you are ruffling feathers. At 16, a kid should be moving towards independence and not relying on their parents to handle their business.

My first car had no engine, and I worked at a junkyard after school for about 6 months getting paid in parts and lift time until I got it running. It was a 1980 Mustang 5 speed. I crashed it after about a week.

Why did you have a brand new car with no engine at 16?

If you'd bothered to read my posts you'd see I think they should buy him a cheap used car that he'll like and be able to modify cheaply, motivating him to get a job to have enough money for his new headers or rims or whatever.

I never said go buy him a $20k car.

I was about 7 in 1980, so I'm not sure if that was meant to be an "I'm old" joke or what, but I can't see how it works either way.

Ah, but he doesn't want a cheap used car. He wants a BMW. You think a kid that wants a BMW is going to be happy driving around an Eclipse? Same reason he wouldn't wear bellbottoms, that is unless they were $200 bellbottoms that were the cat's *** and guaranteed to make him the envy of all his friends.

Hmm, I'd tend to think that's not the case judging by the post. If he wants to learn to drift and has peers that are into cars I think you'd make him a lot happier setting a certain budget to buy a used car and letting him get something he'd be happy with.

Come on Smash you can do better than that, the fact is that statisicly you are most likely to have a wreck in the first few years of driving.

It is also a fact that faster more powerful cars capable of more than the driver can cause accidents.

Add the two together and you have a dangerous combination.

Or did you think that young peoples insurance was higher by pure chance?

No, I think the safe and smart thing to do would be to put him in a car that he cannot "Drift" in. Knowing he will do it and buying him a car that will easily drift is just asking for him to run himself off a cliff being a stupid teenage boy.

Excellent compromise! That's a good idea, that way he gets to pick his own car but has a limit to what he can spend.

Don't have an issue with giving a kid a car. I do feel a bit icky that he's not happy with a Bimma.

Offer him the EVO he'd wantan Lamborghini etc etc.

Thought of managing his expectations by beating him with decomposing fish, or maybe forcing him to watch his Mom and Dad bumping uglies in a gymnastic dressed up style? That might make him think differently.

Oh, and Smash. . . some people on this board did grow up poor (I know, I know, it's all relative)

I think you're missing the point that neither of the cars I mentioned is particularly fast or powerful, hence the ignorant part.

I can see now that it wasn't just an oversight, but a character trait so I'll go ahead and take it into account when reading your posts in the future and save us both time.

You know when you go around a corner really fast how sometimes the whole car sort of slides in the other direction a little?

It's like that, but on purpose.

Let me repeat myself. The V8 version of the '80 mustang had a worse power to weight ratio than a Prius. I built a non turbo charged 4 cylinder engine that literally had trouble going uphill faster than 30 miles an hour. It wasn't fast or powerful. Look it up if you like.
