Thanks all. I figured that hubby and I were being more than generous with him, but when you look at your children's faces and see that they're upset/disappointed/whatever, you start feeling that little niggling feeling of guilt of "Did I not do enough for him?"

I'm going to tell our son that the deal is he either accepts the car or he doesn't. If he doesn't, we won't let him get his license because we are obligated to insure any driver that resides with us. And if he refuses to drive the car that he gets, he won't be getting his license. And if he's still ******** about the BMW, he can drive the family minivan.

Edit: Oh, and

If he wants to drift, kick him out of the house.

A teenager who doesn't even have a license yet should not be 'drifting'.

Try not to spoil your kids; refer to the Paris Hilton thread.

I couldn't care less that he's being given a car. My umbrage is that he's throwing a hissy-fit over which free car he's getting.

Because he's lucky that he didn't have to work and save to get a car?

Oh never mind, it's not worth it.

God bless.

I'd take any running care that my parents would give me over a roll of quarters and a bus schedule.

Let him chew that around for a bit.

That BMW Sounds like too good a for a 16 year old male, even if its older than him.
He needs a beat up old volvo that won't go over 60.Smiley: lol

New male drivers tend to beat the crap out of whatever car they drive. I know I did. I was happy I was driving a beatup old 73 chevy malibu. I fell asleep one night at the wheel and was rudely woken up when I drifted into the guard rail on the Van Wyck Expressway. I did not even stop, I just kept on going 'til I got home, very much wide awake the whole time. The right front fender was nastily dented and a few scratches along the whole right side of the car, they just don't build cars like that any more. The guard rail section still has a nice big dent in it to this day. I just drove it like that 'til I got a newer car a couple years later I paid for mostly out of my out savings. Though I still miss that old beat up car.

Ok, asinine jealous work ethic posts aside, giving the kid a car that's difficult for him to play with when he's young and into cars is just cruel. Buy him a used Prelude or a 2003 Lance ES or something that he can spend some time killing himself in.
Fixed for accuracy.

Powerful cars and young inexperianced drivers are a bad combination.

Bleh, I had to drive my parent's beat up looking land cruiser or the farm delivery van to the mall so I fall into the "what an ingrate" camp. You're not being mean Thumb, he's being a kid.

People that get **** given to them without lifting a ******* finger rarely appreciate them. Ain't you gonna be pissed when he wrecks a new(ish) beamer because he doesn't give a **** about it? I'm speaking from experience here, both personal and anecdotal, make him work for it. Not that I know your kids, but he sounds like a spoiled brat in this particular situation.

If he doesn't like it, buy him a bike. Or better yet, if you want to know what being mean is at all like, tell him you are getting him the car he wants but then buy him a 3 month bus pass. Now that's mean.

No, it's mostly about money, isn't it? If they gave him bellbottoms and he complained that he didn't want to wear them because of the way they looked, you'd feel just the same, right?

Stop being silly.

Right, because fashion trends and modes of transportation are essentially the same thing. Did you grow up poor?

Oh yes, because clothes and cars are the same thing. Right. It's a gift. It is not mandatory that they buy him a car. If the only thing he had to wear was bell bottoms I'm fairly certain he'd wear them compared to going to school naked. You're argument is not valid.

I'm fairly certain he' complain about it. Sort of how he'll take the car and...complain about it.

Yeah, see, I imagine as you were typing that there was a little voice in the back of your head saying "wait, I must be missing something."

Listen to the voices, kid.

Poor? No. No one on this board grew up anything close to resembling poor. Middle class where my parents could barely afford their own car when I was 16, yes.

That's not the point, though. The point is that they can afford to give the kid a car that he hates or a car that he likes and the majority is advocating giving him a car that he hates because they're pissed off that a teenager doesn't appreciate that he's lucky to get a car at all. It has absolutely zero to do with the kids actions and everything to do with the kids actions relative to most posters personal experiences around the same age. Hence the 900 "My first car was an AMC Pacer that ran on ground bunny meal!!" posts.

Why not make the kid happy? He's either going to mature to feel grateful for the chance to have a car or he's not. Having a car he thinks is ****** isn't going to help him along that path any.

My first car had no engine, and I worked at a junkyard after school for about 6 months getting paid in parts and lift time until I got it running. It was a 1980 Mustang 5 speed. I crashed it after about a week.
