VATICAN CITY -- A German man tried to jump into Pope Benedict XVI's uncovered popemobile as the pontiff began his general audience Wednesday and held onto it for a few seconds before being wrestled to the ground by security officers.

The pope was not hurt and didn't even appear to notice that the man -- who was between 20 or 30 years old -- had jumped over the protective barrier in the square and had grabbed onto the white popemobile as it drove by. The pontiff kept waving to the crowd and didn't even look back.

At least eight security officers who were trailing the vehicle as it moved slowly through the square grabbed the man and wrestled him to the ground.
What's the point in having Swiss Guards if they never get to poleaxe anyone? Smiley: frown

Also, I'm amused that the media can continually use the term "popemobile" with a straight face rather than a more stoic "the pope's vehicle" or somesuch. If they must use casual terms, I suggest updating it to "the papal ride".

Do you know how often that would be used out of context? Normally I'd think it funny, but the pope is pretty old. It's not good imagery.

John Paul II was pope from '78 until 2005. Granted, he had a longer tenure than most in the papal seat.

Aren't priests barred from consideration for pope until 69 or 70 years of age anyway?

The thing that leaps to mind for me is the episode of "Family Guy" in which Peter hijacks the Popemobile and takes him to meet his father.

The dude who did must have watched the episode.

I saw the video of the incident this morning and was struck by how oblivious the popester is to what's happening right behind him. This leads me to believe that while he's motoring along on his motorized pedestal his mind must be wandering.

I wonder what he's thinking about as he lazily waves his hand at the flock? I bet he's thinking of Heroes or Lost or how much he hates jews.

I suspect his mind is a surreal mix of under-8 ****-stars, Tamiya aircraft models and Coddy's breasts

He's obviously concentrated on the 5-year old boy giving him a handjob while hiding under the seat. That, and how he's going to convince Saint Peter about ten years from now that it was all a big misunderstanding.
