Today is the 18th Anniversary of the Start of the army assault on the demonstrators in Tiananmen Square. A history of the protests can be found here. It is hard to believe that its been this long. Seems so fresh in my memory.

I remember it well also.

I was just about to leave on my first major overseas trip, (a year in Oz and 5 months getting back to the UK thru asia)and I remember hearing about it on the radio, and then seeing video of it on the TV. It was before the internet.

I think it was the first time that I became fully aware that the world can be a truly fuc't up place.

12 months of shagging and drinking, while hanging around on the beaches of australia then showed me what a fun place the world can be.

I was only 9 years old at the time, so eventhough I remember hearing about it, I had no idea of its significance.

But I went travelling in China in the summer of 2001 with a friend. Beijing was our last stop, from which we were flying back to London. When we got there, the first thing we did was to go to Tienamen Square. When we got there, we walked around for a bit, and saw two teenage kids kicking a football. We smiled at them, they kicked the ball to us, and next thing we knew we were playing a proper 7-a-side game of football, on Tienanmen Square.

It was fUcking awesome.

We ate a Big Mic on that same square the next day.

Just for the symbolism.

Amazing country, but fUcked rulers. Like a lot of other places, I guess. It's crazy but when someone is sentenced to death in China, the family of the condemned is sent a bill for the bullets used during his execution.

Something most Republicans would approve of, I'm sure...

One of my high school friends is on a year long tour in China, attached to the Embassy. I love reading his blogs about his adventures in China.

Another funny little thing is that the Chinese called China the "Empire of the Middle".

And it's not because they think China is at the centre of the world. It's because they think China is between Earth and Heaven.

That's the "middle".

Fascinating place, really.

7000-odd years of civilization tend to leave a mark, as gabji would say.

Liberal Conspiracy
*******
TILT
In Tiananmen Square
Lost my baby there
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes...

So now that's in my head. Anyway, is China still making a big show of "nothing ever happened" by measures such as throwing some soldiers in the Square to discourage any sort of memorial? Who am I kidding? I'd be shocked if they weren't.

You ate an Irishman? Even for Chinese cuisine that's pretty brave.

You know how the French are with their frog legs and snails, a great big Irishman wouldn't suprise me at all.

The 'Big Mic' reference reminds me of when I took the former Mrs Nobby to Belfast for the first time and had her conviced that the McDonald's chain in Ireland was localised as "O'Donalds".

I told her that you didn't ask for a Big Mac - it was called the 'Big O', along with Chicken O'Nuggets and the popular O'Chicken Sammich.

She even fell for the 'Filet Mc-Fish' Smiley: lol

Good times

You can get a box of 9mm rounds for under $20. Now, if they did it US style and charged the families for 20 years of max security lodging, a dozen appeals, medical supervision and a fancy drug cocktail, well, that would be another matter entirely.

I still say a Ka-Bar or 20' of rope is the best option - cheap, reuseable, mostly foolproof.
