Only takes 2-4 days to get over the physiological addiction. For that you can handcuff yourself to a bed if you absolutely have to (willpower is overrated). After that it's psychological. Finding a substitute for the hand/oral fixation is highly important. Gum or toothpicks were good suggestions. You might get some worry stones to keep in your pockets when you feel like you need something in your hand. They need to be things that will keep you occupied and will always be handy.

Good luck with quitting (even though I don't like you).

For some people, a few weeks for others.

It might be 2-4 days for the physiological addiction, however that is not the hard part.
The hard part is not to smoke the weeks after that. When you are chilling with some friends and you're sure that smoking a single cigarette cannot be wrong. That was the reason I quit several times *g*.
I'm not really sure I realized there was some physiological addiction. The first week was not that hard for me. I concentrated on not smoking and did not go to all thoe places I usually smoked. The weeks afterwards where a lot harder. When you go out with friends, have some drinks. Then you are again in the situation where you normally would smoke, and it can become very hard to overcome those moments.
However those moments in which you long for a cigarette become more and more seldom and after some weeks / months they almost never occur again.

Meh, but don't worry about that now. Stop smoking, get the 1st week behind you, then another two or three weeks and you'll realize that it gets easier by the day. However, since you realize how hard it is to stop smoking, do not start again Smiley: smile

You could just send me the money you would have spent...I just realized that I made some sort of error in budgeting this month that is requiring me to transfer 2/3rds of my savings account over to checking! Wheeee!

If I thought it would work, I'd offer to buy the cigarettes you all would have smoked. At Canadian prices, anyway.

Find a girl that is willing to give you a BJ whenever you feel like lighting up. I'm sure that will keep your mind off the nicotine craving.

And if she's trying to quit smoking too, bonus oral fixation relief for her!

Put all the money that you'd spend on cigarettes in a jar, and come August, you'll have enough to fly out to Chicago. Bring Celcio along too!

I remember back in the day digging out the tobacco in my Mom's cigs and replacing it with paper. I caught an *** whoopin' for that, but it did do the trick! She quit cold Turkey the next year.

Care to give me a source on that? Never heard of people needing more than a few days to get over the physiological addiction.

That'll be twice as funny when she gets cancer from the 100 times as many carcinogens in burning paper than in tobacco.

Man, I'll laugh and laugh.

Really? Most things I've read (being someone who reads a fair bit about it since I've failed at quitting smoking MANY times...but not being any sort of medical authority) report that physical symptoms usually *peak* two to three days after quitting, but can last for weeks...like the American Cancer Society says.

I've never heard of anyone getting over a physiological addiction involving a drug that works in the brain as nicotine does in less than about three weeks. Oddly no one in the medical profession has, either. Ever.

On the other hand, idiots make all sorts of moronic claims based upon what their best friends mother's cousin's dog's **** was shaped like at the trailer park on the last full moon.

I think the confusion is in the fact that nicotine levels fall drastically in the first 24-72 hours. Well, yeah; nicotine is metabolized pretty quickly - that's why smokers smoke throughout the day.

Same thing could be said for heroin, though. It's also metabolized rather quickly. That doesn't mean it's easy to kick.

It's heartening to see marketing be so effective on the masses, but the reality is smoking just isn't THAT bad for you, kids. Is it better to not smoke than to smoke? Yes. Is it the most important risk factor for a society of fat drunk NASCAR fans? Um, no, it isn't.
