Just how bad was his jaundice? Both my kids had mild to moderate cases and the hospital I gave birth in still let my son sleep in the room with me and took him for a couple of lamp sessions. With my daughter they just opened all the windows and let the sun in. I guess I just have a really great hospital!
His highest bili level was 18, which my midwife called "borderline." If we hadn't been in the hospital, her course of treatment would have been to get a bili-blanket for him to lie on and to make a point of feeding him as often and long as possible to get my milk going.
The delivery part of the hospital stay was really not bad at all--when we went in because I wasn't progressing, we were attended by a nurse midwife whom my midwife had known for years who was very respectful of my desire to birth with as little intervention as possible (alas, my body had other plans!)--it wasn't until after he was born that the care providers got over-controlling and pushy.
