Need some advice...Follow

Ok, I'm going to an interview in Austin, TX this Friday. I have an interview as In Game Support. It's not what I wanted, but it's a "foot in the door" kind of thing. Now, we live 8 hours or so from Austin. It's shift work and there's no guarantee that I'd have weekends off to come home. It's permanent and full time.

On the other hand I have an interview with another gaming company for a Game Tester position. It's also in Austin. M-F 9am to 6pm weekends off. It's only temporary though, a 4 or 6 month stint. It IS what I want, this sounds like so much fun.

To complicate things, Mr.Katie is getting ready for a 6 month tour in the sand. Like I said, we live 8 hours from Austin, so it's not like I could do a daily commute. Either job would be fine and it would let me see if this is really a direction I want to go in. I hate the idea of living apart but the job market in our town blows. The money isn't great but it's much better than what they pay where we live. What would you do? Should I blow off the In-Game Support and hope I get the Tester position or go ahead and take the In-Game Support if it's offered?

I would go for the tester position. Benies are resume candy, weekends to come home and a short enough stint to get a good feel. Also, you would not be doing support for some f'ucking ****** who forgets his account password.

Did I mention you wouldn't be doing support?

So, spill it. What games?

The game tester position, I don't know what game it's for yet. They didn't tell me. The In-Game support is for Blizzard.

TESTING!

Trust me, I want the testing position too! I've been bouncing off the walls just thinking about it. It would work out great because I'd be home in time for Mr.Katie when he comes back. It would also be something I could add to my resume. All the head hunter would tell me is that it's for one of the top gaming companies.

On the other hand. I want out of this town so bad I can't stand it. There is nothing in this town that would compare to either job. The joys of living in BFE. Yeah In-Game Support doesn't sound that great, but it would keep me occupied and busy. Plus it supplies that green stuff that I need to have to go shopping.

Testing.

Is Mr. Katie going to go Geo-bachelor, live in the barracks and you take the housing allowance to live in Austin?

You've got half of a pro con list here anyway, and I can't see how one of them is even an option...are you just really looking for support for the obvious choice and somewhat concerned that you're missing something?

Let's do it this way, just for the visual-

In Game Support:
Pros: 1. Permanant; 2. I'm assuming that due to 1, it also included benefits, but this may not matter to you since I assume you get health insurance and whatnot through your husband.
Cons: 1. ****** job you don't want; 2. ****** hours, possibly to include weekends

Game Tester:
Pros: 1. A job you'd be excited to do (not many of us really get this opportunity); 2. Good hours, including weekends off; 3. It's temporary (I'm putting this under both pros and cons because while it may not be ideal to be working as a temp, it's also terribly convenient that you'd only be away while your husband is); 4. Can, like the first position, be considered a "foot in the door"...and probably a door you'd prefer.
Cons: 1. It's a temp position (you decide how much of a con this really is).

Other items to consider: pay rate, the attitude of the management and "quality of life" at each company, potential for upward movement (something to ask at that point in the interview when they ask "Do you have any questions for us?"

Good luck in either case. I'd rather tear my own face off and eat it than live anywhere in Texas.

Take the tester position, or you'll be stuck changing people's names into retarded French versions.

Happiness at work does a hell of a lot to improve how you feel at home. Having a permanent miserable job won't do anything good besides bring in money and you'll probably be too grouchy to enjoy it anyway. That's how it was for me whenever I had a ****** job.

No, we have own a house here. I can't imagine he'd enjoy living in the barracks when we have a perfectly nice house to stay in. On the same topic, we bought a motor home last year. I could theoretically drive it to Austin and stay in it temporarily. Yeah.. don't see that happening for long either. It would probably end up with me looking for an efficiency apartment.

You could always find some dude to shack up with in exchange for sex.

Just throwin' out options here.

Oh, and ditto the testing position. Many times temp jobs turn into permanent if you end up doing well.

Good hours but crap pay. A bit like being on the dole really....

I'd advise you to wait until you actually have two job offers to worry about.

Just like what everyone else here is saying, take the Testing job.

Best to do something you really like and will look good on a resume than to do a job you're going to hate.

Probably a little more scientific than you were asking for, but this is what I came up with after a more thorough analysis of your options. I'm still voting the road less traveled!

But what will you do if it is a testing position for Sims 3? can you really stand playing a Sims game for 6 whole months?
