Ok, I'm going to an interview in Austin, TX this Friday. I have an interview as In Game Support. It's not what I wanted, but it's a "foot in the door" kind of thing. Now, we live 8 hours or so from Austin. It's shift work and there's no guarantee that I'd have weekends off to come home. It's permanent and full time.
On the other hand I have an interview with another gaming company for a Game Tester position. It's also in Austin. M-F 9am to 6pm weekends off. It's only temporary though, a 4 or 6 month stint. It IS what I want, this sounds like so much fun.
To complicate things, Mr.Katie is getting ready for a 6 month tour in the sand. Like I said, we live 8 hours from Austin, so it's not like I could do a daily commute. Either job would be fine and it would let me see if this is really a direction I want to go in. I hate the idea of living apart but the job market in our town blows. The money isn't great but it's much better than what they pay where we live. What would you do? Should I blow off the In-Game Support and hope I get the Tester position or go ahead and take the In-Game Support if it's offered?
You've got half of a pro con list here anyway, and I can't see how one of them is even an option...are you just really looking for support for the obvious choice and somewhat concerned that you're missing something?
Let's do it this way, just for the visual-
In Game Support:
Pros: 1. Permanant; 2. I'm assuming that due to 1, it also included benefits, but this may not matter to you since I assume you get health insurance and whatnot through your husband.
Cons: 1. ****** job you don't want; 2. ****** hours, possibly to include weekends
Game Tester:
Pros: 1. A job you'd be excited to do (not many of us really get this opportunity); 2. Good hours, including weekends off; 3. It's temporary (I'm putting this under both pros and cons because while it may not be ideal to be working as a temp, it's also terribly convenient that you'd only be away while your husband is); 4. Can, like the first position, be considered a "foot in the door"...and probably a door you'd prefer.
Cons: 1. It's a temp position (you decide how much of a con this really is).
Other items to consider: pay rate, the attitude of the management and "quality of life" at each company, potential for upward movement (something to ask at that point in the interview when they ask "Do you have any questions for us?"
Good luck in either case. I'd rather tear my own face off and eat it than live anywhere in Texas.
