You know it's only a matter of time before this is used for ****.

Scientists at the University of Calgary have unveiled a computer-generated hologram of a human body, and they say the technology could help both physicians and patients.

Nicknamed the CAVEman by its creators, the image is projected into a cube-shaped virtual reality room. Viewers wear large black glasses to see the body's depth, as it seems to float right in front of their eyes.

The technology could allow a patient to see a map of their own body before going into surgery.

If you've ever seen a holographic projection, or even a plate, on display, it can be a little disturbing, the accuracy is uncanny. As nerdy as it is I get annoyed by their misuse of the term "4D," media needs a little more edjamucation.

For what other reason do we strive to invent?

While in the Windy City, be sure to visit the Chicago Museum of Holography, one of the only museums in the world dedicated to holography and certainly the one with the shittiest website.

Let's not get crazy now.

I would have thought that a website for holograms would have been flashier though.

im getting an immage.....

a holographic mmorpg projected into a dedicated gaming room with Wii type controll system, only more advenced, mabe in the form of gloves, shoes, and other worn appearl.

awsome.

and after the pillage and slaughter of a rivil guild in something like guild wars, you get to download an adult only program that every teenage male will hack that lets you have your way with their female...or male.....avatars.

eventually, mabe we could even learn to fight our wars this way. the victor, of coarse, being the country with the geek hacker who increases the damage of a grenade to that of a nuke. only no one dies.

plenty of applications for the medical field, and all types of training that might otgherwise have been too costly or too dangeous to do other wise.

but your right. the **** application will make the most money from this technology.

I guess holograms don't translate well into two dimensions.

I'm more concerned about their classes -- I suppose they must be heavily technical because no one there seems to have a grasp on artistic design.

Omnidirectional treadmill. A fan finds a show's plot holes, a true nerd covers them up.

One of our Radiographers gave me a demo of a 4D Foetal Scan. 3D image with sound (uses sophisticated ultrasound) of junior playing Let's Stomp Mommy's Bladder".

For about £200 - £300 you can take home a DVD of junior, huddle round the TV and play the "That's his head, no. . .wait it's. . ." game.

Edited to add Linky

I wouldn't worry about that too much it's very normal and has been for years. The creators of high end 3d have always sucked at the artistic and user friendly aspect. The majority are more into the science and mathematics behind it. What's important is that it gets into the hands of the artists, who don't always have the math and science down but the artistic aspect.

You usually won't find someone who has a good balance of the two. Odd be that.

Actually, I believe one of Shatner's books explains that all. Something to do with force fields.

The book talked about it because they were sent to a Vulcan holographic holding cell or something like that. It's been a while since I read the book.

Thing I didn't get is why the damn things malfunctioned all the time. You'd think they'd build in a failsafe transporter to get people out of their when the bad holopeople start going ********

And Voyager pissed me off, too many holoepisodes. Especially that dumb Irish town. That was almost as much a channel-flipper as a Next Generation episode featuring MOTHER TROI.
