Gas prices reach all-time highFollow

And SR: in order to artfully break the rules, it behooves one to first learn them.
----------------------------------------------------------

learn which? the ones you perceive to be correct? or how about the ones Shakespear butchered to get his point about? how about that whole eubonics thing?

all of them?

you dont get it either. you cant break language rules. they are not rules to be followed. they are just patterns used in the communication of ideas. not rules. patterns.

or you can be just another drone in this journey of life. do what your told. how your told. when your told. and have a coniption when anything streys out of your box of normalcy. kind of like OCD.

I have a relatively small tank (14.5 gallons), and it cost me almost $40 to fill up yesterday. Not that I drive a lot, but dammit, I couldn've used that extra money that I spent on more important things, like beer.

I know how you feel. I drive a little honda civic, only an 11.something tank, and excellent milage, but it'll be an expensive weekend driving back and forth to Mass.

Oh, right... literacy plays no role in language.
Quote:
even in my job, communicating the concept i am trying to express is VASTLY more important than the format in which it is done. a matter of life and death in fact.
The funny thing is that, for me to format my thoughts as poorly as you do, would easily take me 5x longer than it does to format them properly. I have to slow down, intentionally misspell words, misplace punctuation, etc. It's a considerable extra effort to do it as opposed to doing it correctly. Even foreign language speakers learn the basic rules of grammar and punctuation in their English 101 classes. So when I see someone who obviously has such a poor ability to convey thought and concepts, I can only assume that they are suffering from some mental dysfunction or else never received a formal education. These are not people I take seriously. No matter how much they huff and claim that their inability to speak without gibbering "doesn't matter".

Oh, and in regards to comparisons to Shakespeare or ee cummings or whomever, the difference is that, when reading the words of such people, one is left with the impression that they are (mis)using the English language intentionally to suit a creative purpose. One is not left thinking that Shakespeare must have suffered a stroke after his 15th paint-chip smoothie.

It also bears pointing out, because being painfully obvious is just not enough for some of us, that language usage does indeed evolve and change over hundreds of years. This is not the same as averring that one can abuse the usage at whim in the name of hurrying that process along.

That's why I cunningly make my current Smasharitrix do all the driving. Hahahah!! I'm a financial genius!!

one word.

eubonics.

evolve sugests something is becoming better, or reaching a higher plain. changing is a better word. and if you dont think its changing dailey, for better or worse, just try and read your daughters text messages to her bff. rofl. rofl is another good example.

with language, there are no rules. only patterns. you people who are stuck insisting something is wrong concerning a language just dont understand the concept of language itself. if there actually were "rules" to language that we should all aspire to follow, then we would all still be speaking and writing in latin, wouldnt we?

but go ahead and point out the breaches of golden language rules if you like. it certainly makes ONE of us look ignorant about something.

BTW(another good point), back to the op.

90 bucks to fill up my wifes suv today. will have to do it again next week too. 40 bucks for my car.

i dont think i would put my familey in my car, or anything smaller than the suv she is driving now reguardless of the cost, but i sure would jump on an electric car for myself if someone makes one.

gasoline doesnt even cover half the dilema. produce will go up, electricity will go up, public transportation will go up, hell, even your lawn service will go up.

welcome to capitolism.

We filled up yesterday and gas at Costco was 3.26/g for the regular. Down the street it was 3.31 for regular, 3.50 for premium.

Don't gas prices reach an all-time high about every three months these days?

Jophiel wrote:
I always thought the "Gas is cheaper than [Liquid]" argument was stupid solely because my car doesn't run on cola/milk/orange juice/Windex/etc so the price of those isn't really relevant to me in the context of my car.

The only relevance I can find in that argument is the way in which the different liquids are made. For pop, you take water, throw in some sugar, and a few other things, and dish it out for way more than a gallon of gas, whereas when making gas, you have to first of all, dig into the earth, then pump it out, then ship it, refine it, and ship it again, and people won't pay as much for it as they will for some sugary, dyed, carbonated water?

That's all I got.

The point was that it was at an all-time high even accoutning for adjusted dollars vs the fuel shortages of the late 70's and early 80's.

Back when the Ayatollah was taking hostages in Iran and the lines of cars wrapped around the block at the few stations which had gas to sell, it was still cheaper in adjusted dollars than it is today.

Whether or not you think that's important is up to you. But the usual response from some people when talking about gas prices was always "Well, it still cost more in the 70's when you figure what a dollar was worth..."

Oh, it's definitely important. 70-80 bucks is what I pay for a tank of gas, and that coming out of what I already don't have is an issue... But I was just saying, it's happening a lot, and I won't be surprised if we top ourselves again shortly.
