Getting back to the OP - it's true that black-on-white crime doesn't get reported as often as white-on-black crime (or race isn't mentioned, when it is reported). The reasons seem pretty obvious. Race is still a very touchy subject in America.

Not so long ago the situation was exactly reversed, and that sucked just as much.

In a perfect world all relevant facts of each case would be reported even handedly. If that were ever the case, I for one can't recall when.

As to the concept of "hate crime", I've never been exactly sure what that even means. It should be used to ascribe motive, not as a separate category of criminal activity. Rape, mayhem and murder are already crimes, whoever perpetuates them.

I think this is one of the most deplorable things I've read in quite some time. I also think it's more an example of a biased media environment, not so much a hate crime. True if it was a group of white people that did this to two black folks it would be plastered everywhere and Jackson and Sharpton would be harping to everyone who would listen. But it's hard to just file it into the hate crime category when we have almost no information aside from the gory details. I think that these two kids just had the misfortune of falling into the hands of five completely depraved pieces of garbage and they ended up paying the price for it.

The question is why did they go to such great lengths to torture and inflict as much mental anguish on these two as they could before killing them? I do agree that it is disgusting that this story has not reached many, if any, national news outlets. So the question is why hasn't it?

I could be wrong, but I've always assumed that "hate crime" is used when there is some sort of provable ideology motivating the crime. If a witness overhears anti-gay slurs during an attack on a gay man, for instance, or if a white person attacking an African-American is a member of a white supremacist group.

That's why hate crime legislation is such a sticky wicket, and why I'm not that keen on it. It basically introduces an element of the Thought Police into the criminal justice procedure. Someone, somewhere has to determine not just what happened, but what the perp was THINKING as it happened (beyond simple "state of mind" as used in determining whether a crime was premeditated and/or committed under circumstances which might render the perp mentally incompetent.) Not a path I'm willing to see our criminal justice system travel.

So, unless it can be proven that these attacks were racially motivated and that the attackers aren't just as likely to have done this crime to a couple of any other race, then it doesn't qualify as a hate crime. Not that this will keep bigots like Virus from claiming it's a "gotcha!"

I'm 99% certain that varus' head would explode if JJ did go on television denouncing this act and using it as a platform for not just racial, but social reform.

Although I'm making the assumption that virus hears anything other than "Kill Whitey" over and over anytime a black man speaks.
