I know this is supposed to be appalling and outrageous but I couldn't help chuckling a little this morning when I saw this.

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A Japanese drop box for unwanted babies triggered a wave of nationwide soul searching Wednesday, a day after it was discovered a preschooler -- and not an infant -- had been dumped there by his father on its first day of operation.

I just envision of some fed-up parent stuffing a 15 year old in that slot. Smiley: laugh

Sad. Smiley: frown

I still think the idea of the drop off place is good though. I this doesn't endanger it. I feel bad for the kid, but if the parents/father/whoever were that desperate to be rid of him, I'm glad that they found a safe way to do so. People can be outraged all they want at this "abuse" of the new system, but it's better than that poor little boy being drown in a bathtub or something.

I'm sure we've all wanted to do something like that at one point. Right?

Most states here have something similar where babies can be left at a fire station or police department without any questions asked. My state (Nebraska) is looking at legislation to also allow this. I believe most of them are known as safe-haven laws or something similar.

I can't imagine doing it myself, but I suppose it's better than having them thrown in a dumpster or some other horrible end.

I got this vision of a Blockbuster Video night drop slot for children. You put the child through the slot, he slides down a little ramp and falls in a large box of children.

"Soul searching"? Over what? The morality of dumping off three year olds? The whole box premise in general?

The idea behind abandoning infants is as old as history. It's not going to go away and a reasonably "safe" way to do it beats being left in a dumpster, forest or sent down the Nile in a reed basket. It should go without saying (I'd think, anyway) that, by the time the child is cognizant of its sitution, randomly dumping them -- even in a government approved location -- is off the mark.

Yeah, probably best to do it before he knows his name and address.

It's fUcked up, that's for sure. Though, I have to wonder how the dad is going to get away with this...

Dad: Yeah, but it just wasn't working out. Smiley: oyvey

For what it's worth though, it's better than the previous system of just dumping the babies into the trashcans.

That's pretty much how I saw it happening. I knew that my way couldn't be correct when I saw that the child was actually alive after the drop off. I actually thought it was more like a garbage drop off then a hospital drop off.

It's the Safehaven laws essentially.. Most public places in states that have adopted them such as Airports, Hospitals, some malls, or any place that would have medical staffing on call 24/7 will have a safehaven drop box. We've observed how it works, parent opens the metal hatch, places baby inside and the alarm goes off on the other side. At this point the on call nurse or doctor opens their hatch's side and takes the child and contacts local CPS for a foster family after a medical evaluation.
