So, the MySpace crowd is apparently boycotting gasoline today in an effort to get oil companies to lower prices. Snopes says nuh-uh.

Your thoughts?

I am planning on filling up the tank on the way home from work. Expect it to be at least 60 bucks.

I didn't read the whole article, but I would agree with the beginning in that not buying gas for one day is going to have nil affect on gas companies making money. If they want to boycott gas and have an effect, they better start walking to school/work and quit driving their cars. Even then they won't garner enough participation for the gas companies to notice.

At least not until gas hits about 8 bucks a gallon or so.

We're at around $3.45 or so around here. I cringe when I fill up the van, our smaller cars, not so much. I'm really wondering whether I could start telecommuting.

It's like a 5 year old so mad the he decides he's going to hold his breath until he gets his way. He's usually taking another breath in about 10 seconds. These idiots will be filling their tanks tomorrow or next Monday or whenever and it'll still be part of this quarter's profits for the oil company.

My plan is to find a MySpace user and siphon his tank so I don't need to buy gas that day.

I'm all about helping the community.

Broke $3.02 today at the gas station right outside my college.

I have seen these things before, and these 'protests' always appeared to be stupid. Gas stations have very little freedom when it comes to pricing gasoline, and even attempts to lower gas prices through various means are met with legal problems. Gas stations rely upon people coming inside and purchasing stuff in order to turn a profit, gasoline is just a product used to bring people to the gas station in the first place.

In September 2000, UK motorists blockaded the main distribution points in protest at the rise in Gasoline prices.

Within a week the UK was at a standstill and the UK gubberment u-turned on prices.

OK - our price rise was as much about taxation levels as it was about Gas company profits, but the blockade achieved its objective. Gas prices fell dramatically.

And the moral of the story?

Was the price dropped because they lowered the taxes or because the gas company lowered their prices? The former would make the goverment the gas company's ***** the later means the UK moterists made their point.

It's a pointless excersize. Not buying gas for one day does nothing, since you'll just buy it on another day. Now if they all promised to change their driving habits so as to purchase less fuel over time, that might have some effect, but it'll probably hurt them far more then the gas stations or the oil companies. The simple fact is that you still get vastly more "value" from a gallon of gas in terms of time savings then it costs at the pump. As long as that is true, most people will continue to pay whatever that cost ends out being.
