I'm a student at the University of Delaware, and over the past weekend a Cinco De Mayo party turned bad. Here are some of the fun lines to know:

http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070509/NEWS/705090356 wrote:
Members of a University of Delaware honor fraternity who dressed up as Latino gardeners and gangsters and attended a South of the Border-theme party have stirred up outrage and cries of racism on the Newark campus.

Cinco de Mayo party photographs that appeared online this week have prompted the Campus Alliance de La Raza, a Latino student organization, to demand the fraternity expel participants. The apparent off-campus party was not sanctioned by the Phi Sigma Pi honor fraternity.

Keep in mind the source, Delaware News Journal, has had many incorrect statements before (In a story about a friend of mine dying in a car crash, there were at least three errors), but most of this is true as near as I can verify. The party was indeed off-campus, and the photos I found and stories I have read online match up well with the reported story.

Now, the news journal can't report on what was said on the shirts, but La Raza has the photos on their page now:
http://www.campuslaraza.org/racism.html

Down at the bottom it shows the gardeners with the term "Spic N' Span Gardening" on shirts that have "Jose" and "Pedro" nametags. There are also three wearing white, red, and green shirts that say "Spicy" "Full of Tequila" and "Hott" on the back and "Mexico" on the front.

La Raza, the Latino group of the University, demands that everyone in attendance at the party face judicial sanctions, and that anyone who was a member of the honors frat be expelled from the organization.

I don't get it? How else would you dress to a South of the Border party?

Are there a lot of Mexican police officers? Lawyers? Doctors? Fireman?

The party was off-campus and, I'm guessing, a "private" function. Can't see much coming of all this.

Another news story that reinforces the fact that Delaware is boring.

I mean Delaware...

Oh noes! College students aren't being perfectly PC, THE SKY IS FALLING!

Meh. If I got pissed every time someone got dressed up like a drunken Irishman on Saint Patrick's Day I'd have dropped dead of an embolism by now. Was it in poor taste? Sure. It hardly warrants being expelled over it.

I was just recently shocked to discover that thousands of non irish wore green on st. patricks day and mocked irish people by drinking and getting drunk. I hope arrests are imminent.

People who are this easily shocked need to be shocked a little more often.

It was in poor taste, I agree. Whether it was racist or not depends on intent, and I think their intent was to be a little outrageous and get some laughs. Show me evidence otherwise and I'll consider revising my opinion.

La Raza is one of those organizations that with the best will in the world do as much harm as good to their cause by virtue of shrillness and entitlement.

What got me was it was now supposed to hide the names and faces, but I saw at least three names on the emails. Dumbasses.

The lass in red, while perhaps gifted with large boobs, is apparently incapable of correctly spelling the word "Hot". Smiley: dubious

Should they be judicially punished? Hell no. They did nothing wrong. Even if they are exteme racists, it's their right. If I saw some hispanic walking around with thick-rimmed glasses, a goofy haircut, and a pocket protector with a shirt that said 'whitey' or 'cracker' I'd just laugh.

As long as they were not harming anyone, big deal. Was it a smart thing to do? probably not. Would I feel bad if some big-*** mexican beat their ***, nope, I'd just laugh at that too. Freedom of speech.

Is it still OK to laugh in America? A friend just told me a joke and I really need to let out a laugh, but I do not want to go to jail or worse...be blogged about!

DISTURBING TREND FOR COLLEGE PARTIES

• At Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon threw a party last month with the theme International Borders. Partygoers were issued visas that allowed them to travel across borders depicted by yellow caution tape. Lambda Chi Alpha threw a party with the theme South of the Border, where invitees were encouraged to wear "sombreros, ponchos and Mexican mustaches."

• At a party in January, white Clemson University students mocked black stereotypes by drinking malt liquor, and at least one student dressed in black face. The South Carolina college and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said they were looking into the party, which students said had a "gangsta" theme. The party was held the day before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

• A fraternity at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore was suspended last year after it held a Halloween in the 'Hood party. The chapter was suspended for 45 days by the national Sigma Chi fraternity, and the school launched an investigation. An invitation for the party encouraged racial-stereotyping costumes, and prefaced descriptions of Baltimore as "a ghetto," "the hood" and "the HIV pit."

From wire reports

While the get-ups of these students was, as others mentioned, perhaps in poor taste, since when are culturally themed parties "disturbing"?

Unimaginative. We used to throw parties where you could come dressed as either a pirate or some booty, and we'd make huge ships out of empty cases of beer in the backyard.

YAR!

Meh. This thread has more racism in it than that party did.

It was in poor taste, but it's helping to reinforce my new stereotype that white kids are stupid, so that's something. Thanks, Delaware!

Implying that chicks with large breasts are illiterate is more sexist than racist.
