A friend of mine called me during the movie (no, I didn't pick it up and my phone was on vibrate, I'm not one of those people) and I was tempted to pick up and say "I'm watchin mah stories."

Did your theatre groan & throw things during the "Jazz" sequence?

We went to see it last night. I agree completely with Bodhi. I thought it was absolutely terrible. And I loved the first two movies. It seemed like every ten minutes someone was on the verge of an emo-angst ridden cryfest. The only interesting character was Thomas Hayden Church playing the Sandman. And he was so underutilized and underdeveloped it was pathetic.

The movie was bad. The plot was terrible. The characters were sad. Topher Grace got hosed because Venom was terrible. I give it one star and even that's pushing it.

He was the only thing that was amusing in the movie.

Did not care for it, but didn't hate it; I would put it at 3/5 stars.

Worst parts included the gaping plot holes, and amnesia (I heard someone yell "Are you kidding!?"), the necessary shot with the American Flag, and watching Harry eat with his mouth open.

Second worst parts included MJ's whining, Tobey's emo hair, Spidey ALWAYS losing his mask in fights, and squirming uncomfortably when Tobey thinks he's Bob's gift to women.

Neutral parts were the dance scene (we had cheering, not booing, in our theater), the scenes with the landlord and Ursula, Topher's role in general (not great, not horrible), and Harry being an idiot and using the damn blade board again.

Decent parts included MJ getting smacked (collective gasp from the audience), Spidey parade, Venom's appearance (as in, how he looked), and emo-Tobey going against Harry at his house.

Good parts included the Sandman's story, the final fight (especially how to deal with Venom), the previews for Pirates 3 and Harry Potter 5 (they look good, GFY), and the scene with MJ and Harry (another collective gasp, but I felt the chemistry between those two a lot more than between her and Tobey the entire time).

I'd see a fourth, but I felt this was pretty weak, and I would only go if friends wanted to go. And it makes me think once again that Peter Parker = Charlie Brown. Anything bad that can happen, WILL happen. Not as bad as Matrix 3, not by a long shot, but not as good as LotR 3 either, again by a long shot.

I suppose I was the only one who took the giant flag thing as tongue-in-cheek. Then again, I'm placing a great deal of hope in the idea that it was tongue-in-cheek.

It was definitely the weakest of the 3 movies. Yeah, the whole dance thing made me cringe. I suppose it was supposed to be funny, or something, but I could hardly bring myself to watch it. The fight sequences were pretty good for the most part, though I would agree about the falling/catching thing, it tends to get overused. Venom looked awesome, but the Sandman was the high point for me. In the end exactly what I hoped would not happen in this movie ended up happening, they threw in too many villains in one movie and it ultimately affected the end result.

However, I did feel I got my money's worth.

Broke down and saw it, finally in non-IMAX glory.

The movie did what it was supposed to do, in that it kept me in my seat for two plus hours and entertained.

That being said...

I feel like that they could have cut one of the villians out, and the movie wouldn't have suffered too much for it. Between the Green Goblin: Part 2, Venom, and the Sandman...the movie didn't really spend much time developing any of them or their presonalities as much as I felt it should.

The dance scene was abit much for me, but it did display just how far Peter's ego had gone with the symbiote attached to him. The best part of the film was easily how he ultimately delt with Venom.

Personally, I keep waiting for Curt Connors to become the Lizard...maybe in Spider-Man 4.

Peter pimpslapping MJ was a non event for me. By this point I felt she deserved it In fact by the end I was more emotionally invested in seeing MJ die than I was any of the villians.

My theater also gave the "****" reaction when MJ ended up kissing Harry.

Did anyone elses theater fill with laughter when Peter started crying over him and MJ's break up?

I gotta say, the way you describe the cinem'a collective reactions reminds me of when I watch movies with my 8-year old Godson. He gasps, shrieks, clapps, yells, and sometimes cries. I haven't heard him shout "****!!" yet, but that will come no doubt.

Well, thanks for saving me $20 Bhod. I was thinking of seeing it for Venom, but from what I heard, I'm not gonna like this movie.

The little Ukranian film from 1976 in black and white about a blind boy in an orphanage with skeeterphiles and heroin addicts sounds tempting, on the other hand...

I'm quite shocked at some of the reactions to this movie.

For one, is it REALLY that bad that there was a jazz dance seen? I get the distinct feeling that at least half of you are condescending toward the scene to boost / sustain your own sense of macho-ism. It was a scene intended to display Peter's lack of inhibition with the symbiote. I don't like the actual storyline of the dance scene, but it seems many of you attack the scene itself just because it was a dance scene, and for no other good reason.

Yes, MJ was whiney, but every single attempt to talk to Peter resulted in Peter saying something like "I know how you feel, when I'm spider man... blah blah". All she wanted was for him to listen, but he couldn't do that. Typical male-female interaction drama, well played out I think.

Of all things, the one part of the movie I probably disliked the most was the "I forgive you" session with sandman. No sign of consequences or reprocussions.. he just vanishes. What the @#%^?

Edit: Is it just me or does Toby have one of the UGLIEST crying expressions ever...?

I laughed at the dance scene in Little Miss Sunshine, in this movie not so much. I think it has less to do with machismo and more to do with context.

Yes, it was really that bad a scene. Not because it was "Jazz", but because I had a hard time rapping my head around the fact that the alien symbiote just happened to know how to play Jazz Piano.

And given it's inherant weakness to sound, it should have bothered the symbiote as much as it bothered us.

And it was a cheesy fracking scene until Peter showed MJ the back of his hand.

The whole time during the dance scene I kept thinking to myself "since when are emo kids into 1950's jazz?"

What theater did you see it in, Omega? I saw it at Fenway last weekend and I shit you not at least 1/3 of the audience burst into applause when the movie was over. I thought the movie was entertaining enough despite its flaws but jesus, applause??

I was at the Loews downtown. Always a lively crowd there for geeky movies' opening nights.

(but I do frequent the Fenway theatre as well, for it's closer to Allston)
