High school senior Allen Lee sat down with his creative writing class on Monday and penned an essay that so disturbed his teacher, school administrators and police that he was charged with disorderly conduct.

...

Allen Lee, an 18-year-old straight-A student at Cary-Grove High School, was arrested Tuesday near his home and charged with disorderly conduct for an essay police described as violently disturbing but not directed toward any specific person or location.

...

The English teacher read the essay and reported it to a supervisor and the principal. A round-table discussion with district officials conveyed, with lively debate, and they decided to report it to the police.

"Our staff is very familiar with adolescent behavior. We're very well versed with types of creativity put into writing. We know the standards of adolescent behavior that are acceptable and that there is a range," Hawk said.

"There can certainly be writing that conveys concern for us even though it does not name names location or date," he said.

You mean the 19 time Pulitzer Prize winning Boston Globe? I'm stuck with it, I guess.

Not every paper can live up to the trib's high standards.

Disorderly conduct, which carries a penalty of 30 days in jail and a $1,500 fine, is filed for pranks such as pulling a fire alarm or dialing 911. But it can also apply when someone's writings can disturb an individual, Delelio said.

"The teacher was alarmed and disturbed by the content," he said.

Speaking of, who's keeping Wizard of Id alive now that Hart is hanging out with Christian Caveman angels? At least they retired BC.

I know Wizard of Id is in the Sun-Times, but Flea and I were reading the comics from both over our coffee at McDonald's last Sunday.

Not endorsing the police charge (although they couldn't rightly just buy the kid a coke, charging people with stuff is what the police do), but I think the teacher herself did the right thing. Now if the amdinistration overreacted by charging him, that's out of her hands.

If one of my employees told me they were freaked out by one of their trainees, I'd look around first to see if she was the only one, etc before I let it get that far.

I thought the essay was rather entertaining...certainly not worth expelling the kid, and having him charged with a crime. Getting him to have a sit down with a counceler, sure, but that would be the limit. I think the teacher took offence to the fact that he said she sucked.

After reading the essay, I sure am glad that he, and others like him are heavily armed and defending our freedoms.

Not because the essay is disturbing, but because this kid appears to have an IQ of about 38.

Mostly new/young teachers are laid back, and cooperative with students as feedback and input into the curriculum and atmosphere. My current English teacher is a control freak intent on setting a gap between herself and her students like a 63 year old white male fortune 500 company CEO, and a illegal immigrant. If CG was a private catholic school, I could understand, but wtf is her problem. And baking brownies and rice crispies does not make up for it, way to try and justify yourself as a good teacher while underhandedly looking for complements on your cooking. No quarrel on you qualifications as a writer, but as a teacher, don't be surprised on inspiring the first cg shooting.

I mean, she bakes them brownies and this is how he repays her? And really, the bolded phrase alone is a guaranteed trip to the cop shop this month. Duh!

A couple weeks after Columbine a kid at our school was busted with a 'To kill list". Full of fictional characters, pop celebrities, etc. Anyone that could read it knew it was a joke, however word spread and before long the school claimed to have a zero tolerance take on it and suspended the kid then sent him off for counselling.

Interesting enough a week after that a different kid got suspended for fighting and his father, a guard at the local jail, came in screaming bloody murder and repeatedly mentioned that he would be bringing a gun in and shooting people. The school adminstrators did nothing on that.

Good ole Canada

WTF kind of essay is that? Where did he learn to write? This is a straight A student? Standards must have really dropped since I attended High School. That essay would have been in perfect form with perfect spelling with intelligent references to historical figures and writers, not a random assortment of words and images pulled from video games and crappy films...

That's the sort of writing the D students wrote back when I was in school. Sheesh!

I don't think anyone is arguing the literary worth of the essay.

I'm a bit concerned that a piece of writing that disturbs an individual can lead to charges of criminal misconduct. Cause that ain't no slippery slope - that's a sheer drop.
