WASHINGTON (AP) -- European astronomers have found the most Earth-like planet outside our solar system...astronomers think this planet could conceivably house life outside our solar system. It's also as close to Earth-sized as telescopes have ever spotted. Both elements make it the first potentially habitable planet besides Earth or Mars.

Sweet, time to purchase some land on that **** for when we finally and completely ***** this planet up.

Anyone else's local new use this story as a segue to finding "kryptonite" (with all superman jokes and little information)?

Want to guess which got 15 seconds and which got a few minutes?

We should bomb it before any potential life there has a chance to attack us.

It's only good common sense.

I'm sure. Still, the thought of possible man-eating amobeas the size of whales prowling the lands tickles me somehow.

I don't see why there couldn't be life there. So far the conditions look right, not that we know enough yet. At 1.6G I can't see it being anything like humans. Probably more snakelike or even flat with no skeletal structure if it's ground based. Water based could have similar characteristics to what we have here, or could be something unimaginable. It's only 1.6G, it's really not that much more. You could walk there, it'd be like throwing an 80lb backpack on. Life probably would evolve to be shorter if it's land based to keep it's centre of balance closer to the ground, and everything would be a little more muscly (it's a word cause I said so). You might have more non skeletal creatures, then again you might not. There'd probably be more flying creatures due to the thicker atmosphere the extra gravity would create.

Also keep in mind there's a generally pretty decent margin of error when it comes to estimating the mass of planet-sized objects at that kind of distance. I'm not sure exactly how big it is, but I do know that all the 1.6 figure really tells us is that it almost certainly has gravity somewhat higher than Earth's, but not so much higher that it would be deadly for Earth-based life. It's too bad the news outlets don't publish the +/- values when they publish these figures.

The 1.6G is probably pretty accurate. There has to be a pretty significant weight difference to change that number. Basically if they've got the weight they've got the gravity numbers correct (at least to the degree we're looking at). They can tell the weight based on the pull it has on the star so I can't see it being out that much.

You never know though, maybe it's just a bunch of asteroids in the same area that they're seeing.

The one thing that could effect it is whether it's rock or ice. If it's ice it'll be significantly larger. Since gravity is based on mass and distance to the centre it could effect the number.
