He dismissed Gonzales' repeated apologies for mishandling the firings and his protestations that they were made on the grounds of poor performance.

Coburn did not challenge Gonzales' decision to dismiss the prosecutors -- who are political appointees of the president -- but said the firings were "handled incompetently, the communication was atrocious, it was inconsistent. It's generous to say that there were misstatements. ... I believe you ought to suffer the consequences that these others have suffered. And I believe the best way to put this behind us is your resignation."

When told by reporters that Gonzales had replied "I don't recall" 55 times in his first round of questioning, ranking committee Republican Sen. Arlen Specter quipped, "That's an improvement, I'd say."

I only saw the selected highlights of the hearings so maybe I just got the worst of the worst, but I can not believe that the brain in that man belongs to someone who is supposed to be the US Attorney General. This is the highest ranking law-enforcement agent in the nation?

Wow.

Yeah, I can't find the quote but there was a great exchange where a Southern Senator asked him, essentially, "You can't remember that meeting? It was two months ago!"

I mean, if he was completely innocent* of anything, it'd have been nice to hear him able to express that intelligently. If he was lying through his teeth, he could have at least done so with a little panache. But he just looked like the proverbial deer in the headlights. Like he had absolutely no fucking clue what was going on.

I suppose he must have some book smarts since he graduated law school at some point but he is not a sharp or quick-witted person. He really came across as exactly what he's accused of being -- a yes-man croney of Bush who was placed in office purely to agree with whatever Bush tells him, nothing less and certainly nothing more.

*In a casual sense. I don't need to hear "innocent implies a crime and there was none!"
