25 Handguns Missing From Sheriff's Department

The Maine Attorney General's Office is sending an investigator to Machias, where the Washington County Sheriff's Department reports about 25 handguns are missing from its evidence room.

Sheriff Donnie Smith says $450 was also taken from the department's administrative office.

An investigator from the state is expected to be in Machias the first week in May to look into the thefts. The sheriff says that if the investigation reveals that someone in his department was involved, they'll be fired.

Smith says two of the weapons that had been in the evidence room can be traced to one person, but he didn't elaborate. Smith notified the Washington County Commissioners about the theft last week.

I'm not one for over-reaction, believe me, but it seems like authorities are very underwhelmed by this event. "Yeah, we have someone coming up in a couple weeks to look into it...if they catch anyone...they'll probably get in trouble..."

Seems a bit odd to me.

The cops have no guns, the criminals that stole them do.

Hence the Chief Wiggum approach to law enforcement.

Will they be really fired or will they be Bush fired? Smiley: grin

Other than domestic dispute, people don't really murder other people in Maine, especially in more insular communities such as Machias. And that is even despite the fact the the coast, with its little inlets and stuff, receives alot of illegal drugs, especially heroin. Without imminent risk, there is no real reason to be freaked out.

The most distinctive block-paved drive in Maine?

With a frisson of excitement every time anyone in sharp heels walks up your drive :-)

Yeah, it's so much more serious in the rest of the country:

Texas: Donkey rescued from Septic Tank

Florida: Costumed Captain America Arrested In Burrito Assault

Mehh. For really Shite headlines, you need English Local Newspapers.

The ones that have huge Front page headlines like "Normandy War Hero trips on uneven pavement." or "Cat rescued from small shrub".

May have mentioned it before, but my favourite was "Woman, 87, dies"

UPDATE:

North London Newspaper Headlines
