Were NBC right to air the videos and photos of the VT murderer?
Yes. We have a right to know:36 (47.4%)
Don't talk crap! The only benficiaries are other loonies who want to copycat!:16 (21.1%)
I don't give a squirrel's lung!:24 (31.6%)
Total:76

I'm struggling to see the public need to see a nerd inciting other nerds to liberate their geekdom through massacre, but maybe that's just me.

NBC just handed every nutjob with a manifesto and some paranoid delusions instructions on how to get their ideas broadcast on the evening news. Kill a bunch of helpless victims.

If we're lucky it'll only result in a whole bunch of panic and school closures over the next few months. Most likely they will be directly responsible for a goodly number of deaths. I can't think of a more irresponsible act then putting that idiots ranting on the news. It sent *exactly* the wrong message.

It just seems to me that by showing as extensively as they have that they have given the shooter what he craved: attention. A picture or two to show the public who was responsible would have been enough. Now, you cant change the channel without seeing his face and hear his words plastered everywhere, which can give people who had toyed with ideas like this, that if they copy catted, they will get just as much media attention.
We've already seen many copy cats emerging from this, fortunately to be thwarted. But it's only been a couple days

Honestly, I didn't feel at all tempted to "liberate my geekdom through massacre." I mean...I have issues, but you'd have to have SERIOUS issues to be tempted to follow in this guy's footsteps. He didn't even have that romantic "Revenge of the Nerds" persona the Columbine kids cultivated...no Matrix-style trenchcoats and all black and big scary guns and homemade bombs, just some weird dude in a tan cargo vest with some pistols. What kind of self-respecting FPS-playing epeen-waving nerd would use pistols? And in any other situation, that hammer pic (and a good number of the others) would be funny for their dorkiness.

Seriously, it's really bad when you manage to be a complete social outcast at a school with "Tech" in its name. I don't think anyone aspires to be that guy, not even us nerds. All this "multimedia manifesto" does is make us all realize that there are people out there even more pathetic than we are, which makes us even less likely to snap and go slaughter people. Not that I was the slaughtering type to begin with, but if I were, the thought of being compared to this ******* would be enough to dissuade me.

The right thing to do would be to downplay the drama, rather than glorifying it.

I'm still not giving up this squirrel's lung, though.

We should do it more often. Make public examples of the lowest common denominator to expose the rest of the filth. The problem is that we have issues with the presentation, not the content.

Were the anchor then to say "Now, remember boys and girls, this is exactly the kind of animosity that someone who never gets laid will harbor. So please, put down the Good Charlotte and Linkin Park CDs and shoot yourself so you can save the rest of us the trouble."

Then it would get a two thumbs up from us all!

You're right, what we need is a government agency to sensor news information released to the masses if there is a possibility that it might result in them thinking the wrong things.

If we're lucky it'll only result in a whole bunch of panic and school closures over the next few months. Most likely they will be directly responsible for a goodly number of deaths. You're such an easily brainwashed idiot. If they hadn't broadcast it, you'd be crying that the 'liberal media' was deliberately avoiding doing so for nefarious purpose.

Find a ******* ideology all ready. Either you're in favor of a free market for information and news or you're not.

There was nothing remotely dangerous about broadcasting the things they chose to broadcast. It's not like it was news about the war or the word **************** or something dangerous to people.

Amazing how everyone's a criminal pathologist. I'm sure you watched it with rapt attention the first time you saw it though, eh?

No, we haven't. We've seen people overreact in preposterous fashion to people *SAYING THINGS* that a week ago they'd have laughed about. Because people are morons, and associate things based on what happened most recently as opposed to the actual risk. If two guys wearing blue shirts rob a bank outlawing blue shirts won't help.

Christ, what does it take to get some simple level of rationality?

The current level of coverage reminds me of "The Executioner's Song", where ultimately it came down to the press interviewing the press because all other aspects had been done to, well, death.

I don't particularly find it dangerous. I'd just rather hear more about Gonzales being skewered verbally.

I just finished watching NBC Nightly News and there was some serious damage control going on. The statement, "we were trying to show you the mind of a killer" must have been repeated 100 times.

IMO, I think it was to early to show the footage. The could have waited a little while later. Of course, the did it for ratings.

I don't think that they should censor what they have. I just wish that it was balanced with the rest of the news. Sure, it has people's attention and like most others, I have a morbid curiosity for it, but I'd like to know what the hell else is going on the world too. Every damn TV station, every radio station, every front page is all on this...as though hundreds of other news-worthy stories aren't going on at the moment. It'd be a good time for Guliani to let some other skeletons out of his closet...no one is paying attention anyway.

Well it conveniently pushed out the story about 150 Iraqis dying in a Baghdad marketplace bombing.

Many of whom were workers rebuilding the same market from a February bombing that killed 130.

Just like the Death Star!

I can envision a scenario where the liberal media cooked up this shooting thing just to draw attention away from the Iraqi bombings, which would have showed that we still have to finish the job in Iraq.

Scary stuff, IMO.

I don't normally post in here but... this happened at our local high school yesterday. In Central Ontario and the paper I pulled it from is in Edmonton. Apparently, it's already spreading panic.

Um... Not to be obvious, but the airwaves they are broadcasting on are *already* censored and monitored and regulated and licensed. By the government even!

Would be nice if just once all that control actually resulted in some intelligent choices regarding broadcasting rather then worrying over whether someone said a bad word or called a group of people "nappy headed hos'.

Clearly, what's needed is for Jackson and Sharpton to make a big issue out of this and get NBCs sponsors to pull their advertising so the entire company can no longer afford the priviledge to broadcast. Oddly, I suspect that wont happen...

Um. No I wouldn't. I would have applauded NBC for doing the right thing. We already knew who the killer was. We already knew more or less why he did what he did. What they should have done is hand the entire package, unopened and unwatched (and uncopied!) to the FBI. The FBI should have sealed it as evidence. That way the only people who'd ever see his rants would have been some investigators and only to ensure that he acted alone.

The message should be "If you do something like this, we'll lock your precious manifesto in an evidence locker for the next 50 years", not "do this and we'll broadcast your nutball ramblings on the news for a week straight".

Dunno. Just seems like sometimes there's a really clear right thing to do and a really clear wrong thing to do. NBC choose to do the wrong thing.

Quote:

Excuse me? Did I once say that NBC should be charged with a crime? I simply criticized the actions they took. I'm all in favor of a free market solution. Apparently, the families of the victims agree. They have canceled their appearances on NBC over this issue. I would hope that a lot more people follow suit. Unfortunately (as I pointed out earlier), since this wasn't a group of black women who were victimized here, we're unlikey to see the kind of reaction we saw when Imus said three words on his show.

I'm sure you'll agree that one is vastly worse then the other. At least I would hope you would.
