He's late to the party. Congress (well, the Democratic folks anyway) made the decision to leave "Global War on Terror" out of the next Defense budget, demanding that terminology be used for specific missions or "ongoing military activity" (or similar language).
The Military Times wrote:
A memo for the committee staff, circulated March 27, says the 2008 bill and its accompanying explanatory report that will set defense policy should be specific about military operations and "avoid using colloquialisms."

The "global war on terror," a phrase first used by President Bush shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., should not be used, according to the memo. Also banned is the phrase the "long war," which military officials began using last year as a way of acknowledging that military operations against terrorist states and organizations would not be wrapped up in a few years.

Committee staff members are told in the memo to use specific references to specific operations instead of the Bush administration’s catch phrases. The memo, written by Staff Director Erin Conaton, provides examples of acceptable phrases, such as "the war in Iraq," the "war in Afghanistan", "operations in the Horn of Africa" or "ongoing military operations throughout the world."

If they banned TWATs from Britainland we'd halve the population and decimate parliament. Prolly not such a bad idea!

I've long maintained that declaring war on a concept makes as much sense as banning gravity or making flying carpets illegal.

That, and announcing that a nation that's turning towards the West is part of an "Axis of Ebil" were monumentally stupid acts.
Before that speech Iran were on the brink of electing a moderate president who pledged to move state power away from the Mosques and rabid Imams. Georgie slack-jaw calls them "Ebil" and Iranians cry "WTF" and elect Ahmedinnajacket to flick the bird at Uncle Sam.

I think Hilary "Girl's Name" Benn is right on the money with this one.

I agree with The Nobbs.

The "War on Terror" is the stupidest expression I've heard since the "war on drugs".

War is terror. You can't wage war on a concept. It makes absolutely no sense.

I also agree that it gives far too much importance to terrorists. Every dumb-*** on the planet that has more explosives than brain is now officially "at war" against the US.

But this pisses me off a lot less than than the sheer and utter stupidity of this expression. Next time, just take it to its antural conclusion and call it the "War on war".

Besides, I don't think LBJ's "War on Poverty" involved an "Axis of Destitution"...and I don't think he thought he could win it by shooting the poor people and interrogating their leaders.
