I thought they forgot I say something Last June.Follow

Last June at the post balticon40 meeting, one of the complaints we heard was that the volunteers mistreated some of the mobility impaired attendees, who needed special seating in the main tent. Since I do on occasion make use of the BSFS wheelchair during the convention, I mention I was interested in being part of an committee to look into how we can better deal with the issue in the future.

I know at the time there were others who also show interest in serving on this committee, but the subject seem forgotten at the meetings I did make before winter, made the bus trip impossible for me to handle. Nothing was said in the email string I was added to when I said at another meeting that I was active on several sites they were interested in advertising at, but didn't have the web building background for doing more then moderating any forum they may create.

So here it is with less then six weeks to the convention and when someone asks for a reserved seat in the main tent, my name pops up on the email list, as the one who volunteered for taking care of any special requests and making sure we don't get as many complaints this year.

This just a week after I find Kitca took me at my word too and gave me admin rights for There is No Fifth Star's web site and my other guilds from years ago restating my status as member of their councils. After serving on a few boards and as PTA president, I should know now not to speak up at meetings by now. Specially now that stress leads to pain, which leads to me spacing out into mental fog easily. Didn't help that as con is a family affair with all my kids there, I have grandmother duties too expected of me. If I make it past the weekend with my brain just fried some, I'll be lucky

Now suddenly I have to get an email alias created and work out the details of what is the job of the Special Needs Coordinator. I only last night confirm who was the snake that didn't forget what I said last June and given some idea of what miracles folks expect me to do at the last minute. Well at least I get a special ribbon on my badge and can go to all the parties this year, if I can still function after the first day of the convention. Meanwhile I
am gathering victims to help me for 4 days. First one is my daughter, who just got a new van cheap, because the dealer couldn't find anyone who wanted a wheelchair lift. Since neither Jonwin and I expected doing much other then some time in the art show, we didn't get a room and now it's too late as all the local hotels in Hunt Valley are sold out. My daughter has become my driver for the convention.

It's a left brain/right brain thing.

And ElneClare:

Why didn't you just tell them to fUck off?

Because I'm a Big Sucker when it comes to volunteering.

Specially when I'm in FibroFog, so thick I can't think and just nod when people talk to me.

I'm still somewhat foggy and taking a day off, in hope that tomorrow I won't feel like my body is burning from the aches and pain.

At least today I may be able to write so Tucky can understand me

Kakar, Balticon41 Is the annual Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention of the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. This years Guests of Honor are Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.

Writing about the con helps pad my post count and make Kao jealous Smiley: grin

Elne, I propose you just tell them you were in so much pain you forgot, but if they don't mind you delegating most of the work to your daughters because you're suffering so badly, you'll gladly volunteer to do someone else's paid labor.

That, or you could just tell them to **** off.

Is it a bad thing that I clicked the links from that site and yet I still have no idea who these people are?

Larry Niven sounds familiar. Save me a google and tell me who he is.

All I can figure is that he wrote space fiction.

I still say you should tell them to fUck off.

My motto has long been "FavoUrs for anyone, but mug to no-one".

If I offer to 'help' someone I'll do just that. That implies that they are still retaining responsibility and working alongside me.

If they bugger off and leave me to take it over from them, I'll just stroll away with a clear conscience. If someone asks me to take over something that's a different kettle of fish from asking for 'help'.

CUnts.

Guess at my age it's silly to expect folks to have read some of the classics of SF/Fantasy.

Burning City
The Burning Tower
Footfall, Inferno, Lucifer's Hammer
Mote in God's Eye
(classic that should be on most folks must read list.)
[/b]The Moat around Murcheson's Eye (US title: The Gripping Hand)
Oath of Fealty [/b]

These are just the short of the works they collaboration on together. They also wrote a few collaboration with other well know authors.

Larry Niven is creater of the
    Known Space
series of novels. Ring World is abest known of this classic series.

As to this volunteering thing, I going to pretend to be getting stuff done and then be s veryo mentally out of it come the convention. that's when folks will step in to do my job.

I remember recently someone had mentioned talks were underway to possibly create an MMORPG based on Ringworld. Don't know how much truth there is to it, but it would be pretty interesting.

I like Niven and Pournelle. I remember buying every Niven paperback I didn't have at a dealer table in the basement of the Hunt Valley Inn back in 1981 (or maybe 82?) and ending up with two copies of The Magic Goes Away. /sigh

LOL, I did a google search and they are still running the Shore Leave cons, and still at Hunt Valley!

Anyway, hard to believe they are classics now. Kind of like when you turn on the "Classic Rock" station and they play something that came out when you were in high school.

I actually went home and got Oath of Fealty off the shelf just because of this thread. If I can, I'll try to stop by Balticon - I have a wedding in Carroll county on Saturday and the rehearsal dinner Friday night.
