So let me get this straight, because women are often degraded by rappers, Imus should have the right to be racist? And you are criticizing Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton for protesting around issues of racism? Because black rappers often use sexist language?

Nice dodge...you didn't answer the question.
In all fairness, I didn't read that far. I was laughing at the opening statement.

Hee. Still funny.

For a moment, I thought you were talking to yourself there. Then I realized my mistake, and gave homage to the Mighty Lord of the Default Filter (Danalog).

Huh? Imus didn't "misspeak." What opposition do I have "towards blacks who act in the same manner"? And what manner is that?

Being under the filter means you are like the troll under the bridge.

The fact that you think this entails a conversation is cluing me in to the reason you might think a response= a come-on. You're quite the case study.

Who's opposed? If someone wants to raise a ruckus over rap lyrics, God bless 'em.

Isn't this overreacting or what? I'm black, and was not offended by this comment. He is only one more redneck. Who cares?

I think there is a reason Sharpton and Jackson always lead out on these racial incidents, despite there being so very many govt watchdog agencies in existence.

The govt wants those two on the point as it is the politically safe spot to broach the race issues.

If the govt watchdog pounced on this story and had tried to pressure the owners of Imus to suspend him....Al and Jesse would have screamed for him to be fired. If the govt watchdog had tried to pressure for firing right off the bat...Al and Jesse would have screamed not enough, and gone after executive firings on top of Imus getting fired.

They would always up whatever it is a notch, for effect.

So, while I personally find Sharpton and Jackson hypocritical loudmouths, they are in the lime-light strategically, and as such, not really their fault.

I can say "My sister is such a *****", and it's all fine. If you say to me "Your sister is such a *****", I'll kick your ***, or spit in your face and run really fast if you're big.

At the end of the day, people have lower standards when they themselves are the butt of their jokes. When the butt of the joke is another group/class/race, then it's much more tricky. Simply because it is much ahrder to detect the intention behind the joke.

I understand that. I do.

And let me go on record as saying that "shock jocks" are not funny, to me. Being intentionally offensive is just puerile and stupid, in my opinion.

Having said that, the "it's okay for me to call my sister a bitCh but not for you to do the same after you've heard me degrade her in public for your amusement" argument is a bit disingenuous.

If you put it out there, and even sell it to me, then I (well, not I, because I'm far more highly evolved than that) will at some point think it's okay for me to use the same language, and even with the same intent: to shock and amuse.

You know we should all be glad Imus has been fired, because it has sent a strong message to the hardcore gangsta-rap culture, that they are next.

As you all know, nothing can strike fear into the hearts and minds of gangsta rappers, like the firing of a 66 year old white male in a cowboy hat with a face only a mother could love.

Rap star Snoop Dogg said in a expletive-filled interview with MTV News Tuesday that Don Imus' use of the the slang "ho" is a "completely different scenario" than the use of word in rap lyrics.

Imus was fired Thursday by CBS Radio after he called the members of the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" on a recent broacast.

According to MTV, Snoop Dogg said that rappers "are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking about ho's that's in the 'hood that ain't doing sh--, that's trying to get a n---a for his money. These are two separate things."

Yeah. I'm waiting for evidence that the message has been received.

Redcommy,

On the contrary I'm all for censoring anything that anyone might find offensive in a public setting. Wouldn't you agree the objectification of women is also a plague on society and we should take draconian measures to see that it doesn't take place on public air waves? Shouldn't citizens have a right to not have the public airwaves be bombarded by such hate speech?

True, but the reason I used that exemple was because it was the simplest and most basic I could find which involved the same concept with regards to the kinds of "double-standards" in question. I agree completely that saying this, with the intention of shocking and amusing, will lead the consequences you describe.

This fact, however true, does not change the fact that those kinds of double-standards are used everyday by everyone, and everyone thinks its normal. The double standards are only pointed out when white people aren't allowed to call black people @#%^s.

Even in the Imus case, though, what you say happens. All the people defending him are saying "well black people say it in rap songs all the time". It's the same as someone justifying calling my sister a bitCh because I said it. Both are wrong, but one still doesn't justify the other.

Edited, cos I suck today

True, and the larger problem is that your use of those characterizations causes problems that others in your in-group will have to clean up. That is, rappers make bank on using the same words and images, leaving grown-up blacks to deal with the consequences.

It does your sister no good if you give people the impression that it's harmless and amusing to call her a bitCh, but only for members of your in-group (your family, say). You won't always be there to protect her from the consequences of your actions.

Yeah, I completely agree. And as much as I like some hip-hop, I agree with Joph that someone should really make a fuss about some of the lyrics in there.

Well, thats not exactly what he said, but too late now.

I don't really have a sister.

I still feel bad about calling her a bitCh on a public forum though.

I always took nappy headed to mean the way your hair looks right after you wake up from a nap. A general state of disarray, if you will. In other words, the way Imus has looked for the last few decades.

Oh, ffs. Nappy is used to describe unkempt kinky hair, when it's all clumped up and deranged looking.
